Super charger Questions

Sup everyone,

So I'm pretty new to building and am trying learn as much as I can on parts knowledge. Never really had a car I could build on till this year and was wanting to get a supercharger for my SS. Two questions I had with this thought was:

1. What brands do you all recommend?
2. Is there anything I am going to need to to change once I do install the supercharger? I'm not too spun up on necessities I'll be needing to change out, again this is my first time actually getting into building and changing parts.

Any advice, knowledge, or recommendation would be of most help.

*PS: I am looking into Whipple at the moment.

You should look into the Magnuson 2300 or 2650 depending on your goals. The amount of power your wanting to make will determine what other fueling mods you'll need.

I’ve got a Whipple and really like it. The 10 rib pulley means no belt slippage. But Magnuson and Edelbrock are great as well.

There is a TON posted on this so do a search and read through the Forced Induction forum. Definitely plan on upgrading your fueling , depending on your power goals. LT4 fuel components are the base upgrade, while XDI and/or port injection if you have lofty goals. :)

Magnacharger and Edelbrock sell kits with everything you need to do the install. They include a hand held programmer that has a tune that will run the car. This would be the easiest way to go to put a supercharger on your Camaro and probably the most cost effective.

If you're doing the install yourself I.e. free labor, I recommend the Magnuson 2300 or Whipple, depending on which one you can find a better deal on. You can start with the base kit at first. You will make around 550 whp on the stock LT 1 fuel system. Drive that for a while and see how you like it. If you want more power down the road, it's very easy to pull the blower and add LT4 hpfp and injectors. If you know up front that you're looking for big power, then go with a 2650 maggie, cam, forged internals, etc right from the start.

As the real pros before me said, think about your goals first and chart your path accordingly.

I have the Maggie 2300 with some extras, and my car has basically ZL1 power (560 rwhp) but less weight, a nice sleeper SS that drives perfectly on the street, yet does have some extra punch. From here on, if you want "serious" power, that is, 7-800+ rwhp, you'll have to dig deep, very deep into your pocket and you'll gradually lose street manners.

One small thing people might not mention often is that if you're a fan of the Hellcat style whine, the Whipple is louder at lower boost levels, my Maggie 2300 setup sounds basically like a giant V8 with hardly any whine—just the way I want, I can't seem to like that 'worn ball bearing' noise.

I don't think there is really a bad option far as brand or type(Centri or PD)...most kits today are really designed pretty well. I have a Whipple and it's been solid. My only gripe is the canned tunes. If you go that route be advised there is a good chance it might not run as it should. I have been currently helping a guy out that put a 50 state P1sc Procharger kit on his car with supplied canned tune. After 7 revisions from Procharger it was better but the owner has since been tweaking Prochargers tune in himself and now has the tune dialed in much better.

So my advice would be to get a custom tune or use the supplied tune as a base and finish dialing it in yourself. I also suggest a JMS booster for the low side to keep the fueling consistent to the high side. If you plan on turning it up just do the LT4 fuel system now because the stock fuel system is pretty much at it's limit with a base supercharger system on pump fuel.

A friend of mine did a whipple blower, and he found out that cylinder #7 ran leaner than the others on the LS series engines...and he found out what the melting point of aluminum was, when it blew a whole in the stock piston.

Pretty much this.

I would add that getting the blower & tune from the same place would be advantageous. Someone like Jenetty that does remote tuning would be ideal. Do what he says & you will be G2G.

I agree gtfoxy!

Thank you for the advice. I really don't want mind blowing power, i just wanted something for a little boost and that's gonna give me a good whining sound. i was looking into whipple, but just wasn't sure if it would be a necessity for me to change anything once I got the whipple installed.

You can get by with installing just the Whipple long as you stay with the 3.625 pulley. I would contact Ted Jenetty as Gtfoxy mentioned. If you buy the Supercharger from him you will get custom tuning included which imo is the only way to go if you are not tuning yourself.

Where can I get in contact with him? Thanks for that.
