LT4 blower vs after market

Sorry if the title is misleading, but I was curious as to why people go with the lt4 blower on their lt1 vs an aftermarket blower tailored to the lt1 like a whipple or Maggie? From what I’ve seen it isn’t too much cheaper, is there something I’m missing?

Because it is much cheaper, and also adequate for builds targeting ZL1 power levels. Where have you seen similar prices for a secondhand LT4 supercharger vs a Maggie or Whipple?

Agreed. I picked up a new take-off LT4 supercharger (back when I first bought my car new) for only $1000 and probably could have had it on the car and running for $4K all in. But once I thought about what I was trying to do long term, it made more sense to “bite the bullet” so to speak and get something that could make more power at lower IATs down the road.

Since then, port jobs like the X Port have blurred that line substantially and you can definitely hustle with a 1.7 for sure. But if you want big power and low IATs, the Maggie 2650 and Whipple 3.0 flat out kill it.

From what I’ve seen, just the blower is 2-3000 and the parts needed to bolt on to an LT1 are another 2500-3000, putting you at around ~5000

Still cheaper than the Maggie 2650 or Whipple 3.0 which will set you back ~ $8k for the blower only.

You can find 1.7's ported for that money. Shop around and buy a ported one, buy the accessories needed for install, put the savings towards a fuel system. Ported 1.7's will support 850whp pretty easy without meth on E85. If you want 1000+ then go for a big blower.

Where would you recommend me looking? eBay or marketplace? Or is there a website I should use that sells these for a good price?

I just seen one posted on FB for 1600.00 shipped with 14k miles in the Dallas area.

OP, here’s an older post discussing supporting parts. Might be helpful down the road or if you just want some more information for an install.

IIRC, this link was for an Edelbrock install but I believe this parts list will cover most of what is needed.

ADM has some parts too.

From what I have read (and someone with more experience can correct me if I am wrong) the 1.7 is more responsive in the lower RPM’s than a 2650 or a whipple. I have read where people say the Maggie is more like a centrifugal where the power comes on higher in the rpm’s.

Also this may sound like a stupid question, but woukd I be able to use a z06 blower as well since it’s also an lt4? Or is it set up differently?

I haven’t done the swap myself but this was also discussed in the following thread. Check it out when you have a moment to spare. The Z06 & ZL blowers are different.
