L86 intake vs ported msd

Red line = l86 intake (stock not ported)
Blue line = ported msd I’ve never seen a dyno comparison between these two so figured it was good info to share. From this thread https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/top...e-swap-on-l83/ |
Interesting. I wonder what a ported L86 intake manifold would do. Also, I wonder what the stock cam specs on that truck are.

Entire long block is identical Differences are the intake and exhaust manifolds/paths Just an fyi, lt1 intake manifolds angle down a little bit at the connection for the intake tube, l86 intakes are just flat. When we install lt1 intakes on our trucks we have to reroute the accessory belt because that downward angle gets in the way. You shouldn’t have to do that on the camaro. But, being that the l86 intake is taller, you’d probably want to verify it fits under the hood first. That could be why it performs so well, because it was not designed with hood clearance in mind. |
I guess I’ll ask. Lol Can you measure the height of your l86 intake? Maybe from the top of the intake port where it touches straight up to where the top of the manifold is, using a straight edge or something?
Don’t mind testing if it fits That torque delta can’t be ignored. Might come in handy for the tall geared m6 Edit: got the play dough out and the Camaro hood is roughly 6.75” from that point to the hood insulation It’s gonna be close |
Saw this. https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/top...ke-swap-parts/
Makes it sound like it it's not much of a difference between the two |

We had no proof of actual gains until now. Had i known the l86 intake makes that much more torque with about the same hp, I never would have recommended the lsd, especially for a truck. |
It’s believable that they are different, the truck manifold is really a lot taller. Just by looking at it. I’ll order one if someone can get me that measurement
I got one from a 4.3 and it’s close |
some nice autoX torque there.

The msd pulls the top end better then the lt1 intake as well. The only way to know if it's worth trying is testing a stock lt1 vs l86 intake directly. For it to be worth it you would need the 86 to pull the top end really close to the same. Also would like to know if the l86 was for sure ported or not and if its a true apples to apples comparison on those Dyno pulls

Unfortunely basically have to eyeball. If it’s so tight that you need better measurements let me know. Looked like 8.25 inches, when i got my head in the engine bay. |
Stupid iphone and photo orientation
|
I think it might fit. But the orientation of the throttle body might make it weird, as you mentioned. I’m sure a small piece could be made to tilt the throttle body downwards a bit for our applications. Or, who knows. Maybe it’ll fit just fine. If this works, I’m going to buy one, port it and throw it on.
