6 Speed vs 10 Speed

I'll just make this short & simple.

What do you people prefer? I'd like to hear pros and cons, and maybe some debates.

A10, faster and you can manually shift if you want...

Just sold my A8 and bought an M6. Nothing against the A8 or the A10. They are great transmissions, and faster than the M6. I just needed my toy to be more involving. I had a 2010 1SS M6, and every time I drove it, it was such a visceral experience. I just missed that too much. However, it all depends on what your priority is.

I agree, for a "toy car" it is hard to beat the M6... I "think" mine will eventually be a Daily Driver and the thought of an M6 in San Diego or LA traffic with an M6 was incomprehensible... Now my car is 20 months old, has 4,700 miles on it, has never seen rain and isn't my DD, but I still LOVE my A10, the thing is amazing!

Save The Manuals

avalonandl 09-07-2021 03:24 AM

I went the opposite way. Had a 17' M6 2SS loved it but the shifting in traffic the last 2 years in town got to me. The A10 is sooooo nice.....and shifts so fast.

After 4 years making the change was easy.

Im just old school and simply must have a manual transmission in my sports/toy cars. Yes, I know, the "computer' shifts faster than I can. But thats not the point at all. Its the involvement and feel of shifting. There is a reason why for so many years real sports cars either mostly were sold with manual trannies or didnt even offer automatics. I get the reasons some choose the Auto. Daily driving in traffic, stuff like that comes into play. So be it.

I gotta have a stick though. Not optional. :)

I have a stick but I coulda went either way. I enjoy manually shifting, makes me feel more one with the car. This is the 4th stick I've owned and by far the best transmission. It shifts like butter. Rev Match is amazing. I daily drive mine, but I've daily driven every stick I've owned. If you're on the fence like I was, go with the manual and save yourself $1500.

A10 with paddle shift. Best of both worlds and faster. I have nothing against an M6, I just want nothing to do with constantly having to shift the car. I've been there done that in my younger days.

Manual transmission all the way in a Camaro. Don’t care if the A10 is faster just enjoy driving a manual. All my Camaros from the first a 1982 Z28 thru to my latest have had a manual trans. My 2005 1500 Silverado regular cab truck has a 5 speed and the 1970 VW Beetle has a 4 speed.

ZED SLED 09-07-2021 06:44 AM

I always hear 'The auto because it's faster'. Yet 99% of these cars will never see a track. I agree to its benefits for a traffic commute as a DD. But for the rest of you, did you spend the extra money and give up the engagement a manual offers just to beat your chest around the water cooler at work?

redcoats1976 09-07-2021 07:26 AM

probably many of the automatic guys dont talk that much about their cars at work, but i am sure that the convenience of not shifting and the few 10ths quicker at the track have persuaded a few to make the change, one of my friends had to replace the 4 speed manual in his 1970 pontiac with an auto due to medical issues and wished he had done it years before.

Blackmonba6Gen 09-07-2021 07:41 AM

I have the A8 and its fun but it gets old quick after a few years. I take mines to the track and I noticed trans doesn't like me beating up on the car. Maybe its the A8. IDK. I don't like paddle shifting on the track either I rather row the gears. I'm giving up on my A8 for a Manual for that purpose. It's a reason why GM put the 6 speed in the 1LE first.. then the 10 speed follow afterwards..

I first contacted my dealer about ordering a stick. He said he would to that, but I wouldn't be able to resell it. No demand. But I do prefer sticks.
