New ZL1 tires cracked!

Had the wheels off of my car the other day to clean up the brake dust and install stone guards. While I was cleaning the rims off of the car I noticed cracks in the rubber:mad: Car was supposed to be built in September but the strike pushed it back to Mid November. Once the car was built CN decided to go on strike and the car sat at the rail yard until mid January and the car made it to the dealer here in Canada the first week of February. Once at the dealer the car was stored in their heated shop until I came and picked it up in June.

I inspected the tires as I was aware of the issues with these tires in cold weather, didn't see anything at the dealer as the cracks are not on the sidewalls and more in the middle of the tire... Going to contact my sales guy tomorrow and see what they have to say... Sucks for sure!

Those should easily be replaced by GM.

Date code off the sidewall...those look old AF...build date on the car has nothing to do with the tires.

Yeah, old AF! Manufacture date 33/19. Made in the USA!

Wow that’s horrible

If the build date on the tires is 33/19 then they were made in mid-August 2019 (33rd week). If the car was built in mid-November 2019 then the tires were only about 3 months old when they were installed. Doesn’t seem that bad. Better than the last set of tires I bought locally. Hopefully GM and the dealer will stand behind them and replace them under warranty.

Looks like they were kept in cold conditions for a time. I wish more people took these warnings seriously.

they (GM or Goodyear) will warranty them. A PITA but you will be covered. Speak with your dealer ASAP!

Those tires show the exact failure pattern of both the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 and Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 & 3R tires when stored/moved in extreme cold temperatures. They don’t crack and fail in the sidewalls, they crack in the center tread area. If you picked the car up in June, then that is a clear warranty replacement. Your dealer may not agree without being educated on how the cold affects those tires...I presume they sell more Tahoes and Silverados than ZL1s. You may have to provide the dealer with some research to help them understand, but you are hardly the first person to encounter this problem on a brand new car delivered with the “summer only” tires.

It's a known issue with these tires sitting in freezing temperatures, I think there's even a TSB on it.

damn!

avalonandl 07-06-2020 07:58 AM

With cracks like those I wouldn't drive that car over 25 mph.....

LT4Greg 07-06-2020 08:00 AM

I would get them replaced as soon as possible!

Yep, driven in the cold.
