Check out the sticky above. Lots of info in there. I was a long time iracer but ended up going too deep down the rabbit hole and ruined it. I sold my setup a year ago for $5k. Don't miss it really, you really need to dedicate some time to it to run with the fastest guys like anything. Then there's the aliens, which no matter how much I practiced I could never run with. It will absolutely help you learn a track and the fastest line, etc.

If you want something that will last long you might as well spend the money. But I never suggest anyone dive into it unless you're going to spend a lot of time driving. The stuff below is ideally what you need. However a G29 to a desk is sufficient for someone starting out.

Cockpit - Simlab
Steering Base - Pick a DD base
Wheel - Pick a wheel
Quick DC - Pick one that will fit the wheel/base
Pedals
Monitors - 1 or 3 or VR
Seat

I can tell you my cost, Although I bought most of my stuff used. And most of it was bought years ago. The newest thing I have is the 3 monitors which are roughly 1 year old.
Pedals - $1k
Wheel - $1200
DD Base - $1000
Cockpit w/seat - $400
3 New monitors - $900
Button box - $50

DD Wheels can be found at better prices today, I've had mine for like 4 years now. And yes, it's a wire mess atm.

I don't know what the actual numbers are, but if you want to play competitive or even as a hobby vs others online your best bet is Iracing on the PC. If you just want to do casual stuff you can pick any racing title on the PC or xbox/console.

ill get some photos up but i recently got VT with my sim setup. soo much fun! Mainly enjoy iracing, feels the most realistic and since you pay for it, it does keep some yahoos away.

I have a sim rig. I think it came in around $6k in total.

GT Omega Prime Cockpit
Fanatec CSL DD w/ Boost Kit
Fanatec McLaren GT3 Rim
Fanatec ClubSport RS Rim
Fanatec CSL Pedals w/ Load Cell Kit
SHH Shifter
Self built PC w/ Ryzen 5600X & RTX 3080Ti
Samsung Odyssey G9 Super Ultrawide Curved Monitor
Probably a couple of smaller items I'm forgetting to list

Most folks consider Gran Turismo & Forza to be arcade games. They're much less realistic. The popular sims are iRacing, Assetto Corsa & Assetto Corsa Competizione.

Damn there are some nice setups in here!! I personally have a rig built out of PVC pipe and a SRT4 Driver seat. I'll try and post some pics up.

I mainly Run GT with my buddies. There's about 10 of us that run a winter league. ACC is a great sim as well. Much harder than GT

People pricing out the costs of their rigs here but I don't think I saw any pricing for the actual computers so far lol. A decent PC to run this will go for probably at least $2K now, not counting the monitors and whatnot...

Figure ~$1k for GPU. And another $1k for the other components. So that's a fair estimate. Fanatec gear was ~$1k. Monitor was just under $1k. GT Omega cockpit and monitor stand was another $1k. Other accessories and add ons make up the rest. So my $6k estimate is for a complete setup. It might be doable for less... and you can certainly spend a lot more too.
