2016 Camaro SS LT4 engine swap

I recently dropped an LT4 into my 2016 Camaro SS. When I mentioned this on the forum there was a lot of interest so I'm creating this thread in case anyone has questions.

"How much did the wheels run you?!? I would assume a lot considering there aren't any customer 1LEs delivered yet."

The GM 2017 SS 1LE wheels were actually available before the replicas. I probably got the very first set. These stock photos at Pace Performance are of my actual wheels.

Looks like the current price is $622.40 each which is exactly what I paid. The shipping was $125.00 for all four.

"those mid rise lifts are great. did you reuse the stock clutch? stock exhaust manifolds and the rest of the exhaust?"

I'm not a huge fan of the scissor lift. I couldn't have done the job without it, but a two post lift I think would have been much better for an engine swap. This one seems like it's always in the way. I'll sell it cheap if anyone wants it.

I used a new Z06 clutch and flywheel. The flywheel is the exact part # as the SS. The clutch is visually identical, but the part #'s are different. I assumed the Z06 clutch is stronger so I went with it. I would bet the stock SS clutch would hold fine though.

Exhaust manifolds are the same GM part # for the LT4 and the LT1. The crate engine came with new exhaust manifolds so I used 'em. The exhaust is the stock dual-mode exhaust. The new engine seems to move way more air which makes the stock exhaust seem significantly louder than before. I really like it wide open most of the time, but being able to shut it up on a long interstate drive is priceless.

"how did you get that lt4?"
I bought a new GM LT4 crate engine. Any GM parts dealer can sell them. I would recommend Pace Performance. Their website sucks but the people behind the business are top notch.

"what are you gonna do with your stock lt1?"
I still have the LT1. I'd like to sell it locally so I don't have to ship it. I'm open to offers. It has 1,325 miles on it.

"did you have to retune or replace your pcm after the new engine?"
There's no need to replace the ECM, but it does need a tune. I went through hell to get it tuned, but it runs awesome now. I'd gladly give the tune file to whoever wants it.

Did you use a dyno as part of the tuning process? If so how much rwhp and rwtq did it put down?

Awesome project by the way! You are way more brave and mechanically skilled than I could ever be to tackle something like this.

Thanks for the kind words.

No dyno yet. I suspect it'd be between 575 and 600 RWHP. I'm hoping to get it on the dyno soon. Once it's dyno tuned it shouldn't be too much trouble to get it above the 600 RWHP mark.

Why did you decide to do this rather than just add a supercharger to the LT1? You are seriously skilled. I would be too scared

genecag 10-06-2016 09:55 AM

Wow, you got mad skills. looking forward to seeing more info.

Good Question.

The supercharger swap is probably the way to go for most people. The full engine swap was a lot more work (and money).

I decided to go for the LT4 because the LT4 is designed from the ground up to be supercharged. You get different/better pistons, heads, rods, cam, high pressure fuel pump etc.. However, if had it to do over, I'd probably opt for the supercharger kit and save two months of my life.

Yeah I am more thinking supercharge my existing and just change some internals cause I can't imagine pulling existing engine. Be interesting to drive the modded cars back to back

Here's the heat exchanger. I used the same one as the '17 ZL1. In fact nearly every part I used on the swap was a GM part and the same as the ZL1. All of the parts were already available because the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V is basically a 4-door ZL1.

Since somebody asked about the clutch... here's a pic of the new Z06 flywheel (same as Camaro SS) and clutch I used.

Here's how I plugged the sound resonator hole in the firewall. I simply cut the tube off and glued on a rubber cap.
