PDR for a DashCam?
 

Just a quick question, but can you use the PDR system for a daily DashCam? I would think it would be easy to do...but you never know. Thanks!!

How do you mean? I just turn mine on when I drive in case something happens.

only way you can do it is by manually starting PDR mode each and every time you get in the car. I used to do it in my 1ss 1le. The ZL1 i bought doesn't have PDR but the dash cam I use has much better resolution than PDR. The only real problem is the PDR doesn't automatically overwrite old files so you have to go in the memory card and delete the old files manually.

So it will work, but it's a hassle. Gotcha. So if it fills the memory card, it will just error out and not record? I wonder if you could put in a higher capacity card that would work longer?

So PDR mode...is that something you have to start every time the car starts up?

Wonder if you could use the camera as an input for an aftermarket dashcam unit.

Yeah, you have to manually start it each time which is the biggest downfall because a lot of times I have forgotten.

Any decent dash cam will continue to record while the car is off and catch incidents that happen when you aren’t around. The PDR isn’t going to do that.

It's still nice to have. I do use mine daily and of course on the road course.

You can go in and manually delete the files from the PDR home screen. But it does not record over older files and it does tell you how much time is left to record.

It only records in 720p, good enough but you can buy a decent dashcam for $100 with 1080p.

But then you'll need to put it on the window and hopefully it doesn't block your view since the view from inside the car is terrible to start with and have a power cord hanging and plugged into the most awkward 12V outlet design.....

A Blackvue and many other dashcams can be installed right behind the mirror, and with a Gen5DIY overhead console harness there is no visible wiring whatsoever, just the final 2-3 inches coming from behind the headliner (and the OEM headliner already has a small notch in the middle that the wires naturally ease into, very interesting). Zero impact on visibility.

As someone that's had to use a very well reviewed 1080p dashcam, I've learned any dash cam that records in less than 4K is essentially rolling the dice. I was in a hit and run with the C7 and at night with 1080p the first time the cam got a legible read on the plates was after I chased the dude down the first time and he finally pulled over. In a real hit and run I would just have the footage, but no plate number.

Because I got the plate number, my uninsured driver deductible waiver kicked in and I got my $1000 deductible back plus the cops were able to see it was a stolen car so my insurance company covered everything at the cost I wanted with no arguments.

Now, I run a BlackVue 4K and I've tested with the girlfriend's car at night. It can read plates from the next 2 lanes over from about 20+ feet away.

I upgraded to the DR-900S 2CH in the meantime, and even its 4K front camera isn't perfect, but at least I stand a chance of capturing a plate, should something happen (hopefully not).

PDR as a dash cam is ok. You have to remember to turn it on everytime you drive. But you get no rear visibility view. I do like the metrics you can have on-screen like brake and throttle application.

So is PDR worth having for someone like me who probably won't ever track the car? I have it ready on my order, but would I be better off saving that $1300? Or, is it a must have for resale? I had it on my ss 1le and literally never used it in 2 years, but when I went to sell that car, everyone wanted to be sure it had PDR. Thoughts?
