A10 or M6
 

I have never owned a automatic when I had the option for a manual. I just like being part of the process with the manual. However, the A10 has me thinking of going auto for the first time. I am truly conflicted by this choice as I would have laughed at you if you would have said I would have started a thread like this before the A10 announcement in the new ZL1. I autocross and 1320 my car as well as cruise in it during the weekends. What do we know about this A10 beyond it is coming? Do we have any idea on durability, responsiveness (specifically on downshifts and paddles), cost? I desperately want to be able to justify staying with a manual but dang...if this A10 is all that it is cracked up to be, I am going to have a hard time saying no to it. Also, I am getting older and if I can keep both hands on the wheel more, that might be a good things as well as I add more power to her.

Hey, I think it deserves it's own thread. the other is info about the A10, and seems to me you are asking the question, go with A10 or M6? Maybe make it a poll.

It is a huge dilemma for me. If it were between the latest version of the A8 and M6, I'd go M6, but now with this A10 and what i've seen on the video of the hot laps, it really has me thinking about it. It's a little early cuz we don't have much info on it, but there are some definite advantages to it that must be considered.

If I can afford the ZL1 I'll probably go with the A10 and I never thought I would hear myself say that. But gone are the days of archaic 4 speed autos that have no place in motorsports. Today's autos are even better than a lot of DCTs or SMGs from just a few years ago. Every time I watch the video of this A10 I can't believe how fast it shifts. I swear it sounds as fast as an F1 car on upshifts. If they can get away with not having the gas guzzler tax on the A10 but not the M6, that will automatically cut $1,300 off the price of the A10 option. I can see this happening. No way will they get away from the GG tax on the M6 with only one OD and a 5th gear 1:1 ratio in my opinion. Can you imagine a CAGS that makes you go 1st to 5th lol

I'm in the same boat as you OP. I never had an auto in a car. In trucks yes but not cars. I did try the A6 in the 2LT I had and I found it slow and clumsy. I hated it. The paddle shifts were useless and it seemed to take a long time to "figure out" what gear it should be in otherwise. Haven't tried the A8 yet. If there really is a fast shifting auto that's consistent and reliable I might give it a try.

Yes, would be nice if gearing is so that MPG's are improved to avoid GG Tax, that would probably push me over the fence.

I wonder though if heat will be an issue; of course there are 11 coolers and at least one for transmission right?...so maybe it won't be an issue.

I'm getting older too, so that is a factor.

I think at this early stage the notion of the A10 has many die hard manual fans thinking twice; but it is still early.

I'll be the first to admit I am a HUGE die hard manual fan. I fully acknowledge the performance advantage current auto transmissions bring, but I just don't care. It's so much more than that for me. It's the visceral feel of driving the car and rowing the gears. When I take my car out into the mountains on a twisty road there is no substitute in my opinion for the absolute fun of driving a manual. I'm sure this 10 speed is a fantastic transmission and will certainly be quicker in just about every respect, but again, I want to drive my car, and a big part of that experience is shifting. To each his own. I'm glad Chevy gives folks the option and I'm especially thankful that we haven't become like the European manufacturers who are more and more going exclusively Auto. Porsche seems to have listened to fans with their new 911R manual only car!

I will be going with the A10. I want the ease of the auto in traffic and the fun of the stick on the track. The DCT transmission has always filled that gap. Now, from the looks of it, I can get the same performance from the GM transmission.

The question I've been wondering is what are the racers using for transmissions these days?

I have always had Manuals in my camaros but the A10 is very enticing. I would have to drive both to make a decision. As of now I am still leaning towards the M6.

I'm not sure how you could watch this hot lap video and not seriously consider the A10.

Strongly thinking about A10 even though I am a die hard manual fan. Only thing on my mind is 1st year A10 might have problems compared to future model years as it would be the first.
