Info and write up for the SS 1LE differential FLUID CHANGE.

We can have this made a sticky after it gets done. As it does differ from the regular SS diff.

As we all know we gets lots of threads made on the subject, and the questions are non stop.

So if someone has done this, or plans to do this, and can do a complete write up the community would appreciate it.

By complete we need a step by step process, what tools are needed, what fluid is needed (maybe best place to buy), and pictures would make it even better.

Thanks -

I will be doing mine when I get to 1k miles which could be as soon as this weekend. When I do it I can take detailed photos and post a write up if no one has done so yet.

That would be great. Looks like many members can use this...

I agree we are getting lots of threads about it but it's way too simple to be able to create a sticky for. Its literally a drain plug and a fill plug. Drain the fluid then refill it with the recommended AC Delco fluid using a screw on fluid pump like shown below. Drive the car in a few figure 8's in a parking lot then come back and top off the fluid again if it dropped any. That's it. It honestly is less involved than an oil change and I don't think making a sticky for an oil change would work either.

I tend to agree with mjk3888 on this.

this is the fluid you want:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

FYI...the noise will not go away immediately. Give it at least week or 2. It's been 2 weeks for me and I sometimes hear one small groan..barely. If it's still there after a month...I'll do the fluid change one more time. That's supposed to do the trick.

I hear you, BUT the issue is the 50 threads on the same topic. So it is pretty obvious that there is an issue here, no? A sticky would solve that. A sticky doesn't have to be super technical, it just has to make peoples visit here more simple as they can find the answers to this, as opposed to starting yet another thread. This may also get some more people to actually work on their own car as they can see how simple it is...come on, work with me here fellas lol.

If it was easy for me, and it was, then pretty much anyone can do it.

1. jack car up
2. remove drain plug on bottom rear side of eLSD (I think this is a 3/8 drive style bolt head)
3. remove fill plug (top drivers side of eLSD) with same ratchet drive
4. wipe both magnetic ends of plugs to remove collected metal particles
5. re-install drain plug
6. using pump of your choice (i purchased a penzoil oil pump from Walmart for 8 bucks) and your choice of fluid (I used AC Delco OEM fluid, ACDelco 10-4034, which contains the friction additive), pump the 1.5quarts into diff
6. reinstall fill plug
7. lower vehicle
8. drive it like you stole it

Flip 2 and 3, if you cannot remove fill plug you're sol

Clearly you are missing some steps involving beer or your beverage of choice. ;)

That is the correct gear fluid. Look in the performance supplement and you'll see that the fluid specs in there are for ZL1 models only. It states refer to the owner's manual for 1le equipped vehicles.

Cross reference owners manual part number Dexron LS gear oil GM part number 88862624.

Are you getting confused about the eLSD clutch fluid? That fluid is NOT what needs to be changed after 1500 miles and before the first track day.

As mjk said, it's very easy and intuitive to changes rear gear oil.

Raise vehicle,
Remove fill plug,
Remove drain plug,
Drain oil,
Replace drain plug,
Fill rear end with fluid (1.2qt)
Replace fill plug,
Lower vehicle,
Drive vehicle for a few circles (left and right),
Raise vehicle,
Remove fill,
Check level (fill as needed),
Reinstall fill,
Lower vehicle,
Done

I think the confusion is believing the eLSD constitutes the need for different "gear oil", that's false. The eLSD needs a separate change (when needed, not after 1500 miles) of clutch fluid 5.4oz.

For a simple gear oil change, nothing is special or different for 1le equipped vehicles

HA...yes, well that's always implied I thought, And here in Colorado, it could be strain of your choice :smoking:

I think we are going to have to build a wall to prevent more threads on diff changes.
