engine cover paint flaking

Has anyone seen this before on any of the LT1 engine cover? The red paint on the Camaro lettering is flaking off. No chemicals used ever on the engine cover, engine bay, or hood.

A lot of people have complained about this. Should be easily replaced under warranty. I will probably end up painting mine custom though.

The black letters look pretty good...In a couple of months maybe you can call this a "mod".

I've seen a thread recently where almost everyone complained that it happened to them. Maybe a quick search can help you find this thread.

I had a oem cover painted the dealer wouldn’t install it even after I told them it was oem, I then went to another dealer and same deal. Did it myself the plastic clips even with the proper tool was a bit of a headache but I got it on in about a hour aprox could be a excuse for a upgrade.

My cover is started to do the same thing. I will wait until they flake off more and them just remove the rest and leave them black.

2016SS, that engine cover looks sweet. I'll just have mine replaced under warranty the next time it's in for an oil change, which will be soon. Thanks for the feedback guys!

It's interesting that it's only happening on the right side. More heat?

RedJewel2LT 04-04-2018 08:35 AM

Could be more heat. This engine produces a ton of heat. I actually had a starter fail on this engine last summer with about 7000 miles on it, likely due to excessive heat. My own personal thought, not validated by the dealer.

How do you like that cold air intake? Did it make any appreciable difference in performance or is it more for sound and aesthetics? I'm thinking about getting a GM performance set up.

I see. I would think that the heat would be fairly uniform on both sides of this engine though. Unlike my old 335i, that was twice as hot on the exhaust side with the two turbos.

I have the GM performance one and love it. IF you want to keep warranty that's the way to go IMO.

If you're not worried about it, RotoFab is probably the better route if you plan on modding more down the line.

My engine cover has the same problem, never thought to see if it would be covered under warranty. Tried two dealers near Denver, Medved said it is only covered under the 12/12 warranty (what the hell is that?), called Ed Bosarth service and they said give me your vin and I will order you two new ones tomorrow, when do I want to come pick them up?

Like we talk about on the forums all the time, you have to pick good dealers.

I was installing my stb on my 2018 1le and I noticed the red letters looked like they had been brushed on, but it was actually cracking. Touched it with my finger and it flaked off. I have to have it inspected this month so I guess I will have them order two new under warranty. Going to ask and keep the old so I can make a spare set with vinyl or high temp paint.

My car is one year old and has 900 miles. Can’t believe it!
