I hate to say this. I agree with this guy and have thought this ever since they released how much power the 500 is going to have. It’s kind of expected I’d say. Although our cars are lighter, 110hp is very significant.

Look at the difference between the Road and Track test and the Car and Driver tests...ZL1 won to the quarter....all im saying is that you cant get an accurate test of our cars on the stock GoodYears in 38degree weather.

Scottyz 01-17-2020 06:15 PM

Yeah the temperature definitely doesn’t help. And again the ZLE is not tailored to drag racing.

Boo 01-17-2020 06:18 PM

My bad the Z was 11.5...although we all know it can be faster....while the GT500 was 11.4. My point is that Road and Tracks three way was bullshit...

Trap speed tells the truth about which car is faster, and no wonder the GT500 is it with +110hp.

That said, faster isn't always the winner, and had they used a standard ZL1, chances are it would've been at least .2 faster, matching or beating the Mustang. Still, more than respectable performance from a 4-year old, unchanged design against the competitor's brand new response.

Exactly! I get that both the Red eye and the Gt500 will pull on the Z after the quarter or so but sooner or later a corner is going to turn up and id rather be in the Camaro when it does!

ST1LE 01-17-2020 08:12 PM

The 500 will out accelerate and the Camaro will out turn. Pick your poison, both are bad ass and more capable than most cars at both of these things.

Guys have gone 10.6@133 in stock gt500’s. That’s a fair amount faster than any ZL1 has gone stock. The ZL1 shouldn’t win in a drag race for any other reason than the driver of the gt500 isn’t as good as the driver in the zl1.

Zee_Ohh 01-17-2020 08:43 PM

I would really like to see a ZL1 with just a magneson 2650 slapped on and tuned for pump gas. With both cars on equal size blowers I woul be the ZL1 would have a mph or two on it since it will have more TQ and weighs a tad less and ultimately its all bench racing as I would never buy any of those cars and would have a proper muscle car with a man pedal and get a 6spd ZL1.

FYI: The GT 500 can handle. The car is for real. Progress is good. Makes GM Fire back.

It can handle for one hero lap.

At over 4000lbs and very nose heavy, it's a great muscle car that can 'also' handle. Props to Ford for making a pig dance....but it's still a pig.

My favorite trim in the Mustang lineup is the GT350/R. It's more balanced and visceral to me.

SienarSystems 01-17-2020 11:13 PM

Wish the GT3 RS was in the budget...that is an unreal automobile. Given the manufacturer, their race history and the price, it better be...

mlee 01-17-2020 11:26 PM

Those trap times don't lie... but the torque down low with a heavier car gives the ZLE a head start. This should also work well for the ZLE on the more technical tracks.

Recall the 90's GT was a dud so Ford brings out the almighty Cobra to compete with the run of the mill Camaro Z/28, never mind the 1 LE, don't even bother you lose that match up all day. Cobra plan fails so they cook up the Cobra R, followed by the 95 Cobra R and then the 2000 Cobra R. All of which more or less failed to get the job done on the street or track in the as-delivered form... read stock or class conforming for the sanctioned race bodies.

I could continue but I think the point has been made. For the record, I have owned and raced Mustangs and still own an ex-FHP 1993 Notch. What I could never understand and still to this day can't figure out is why loyal Mustang owners are willing to pay a premium for a special/limited edition that in most instances is an inferior handling and balanced car with up until a few years ago came with weak brakes as well. Boggles my mind, and sure I get the limited edition thing, but when is 5000 copies a limited edition? On the flip side of this Chevy continues to crank out great cars for a fair price which if optioned correctly runs all day at the track.

Toss in the standard and free track warranty and it is hard to fathom not buying a Camaro or Corvette, especially if your intention is to track the car. Finally, when you consider the competition can't match the value and performance offered by Chevy with what amounts to regular production vehicles at the same price range it sure is a good time to be in a Chevy!

And heads up for any trolls, don't even bother with all your BS reasons that Camaro and Corvette are inferior to brand X. When you can buy a new stock off the lot car for similar money and go as fast, come back and we will talk. Don't worry I'm not holding my breath so take all the time you want...err... need.

This is an argument I made some time ago. Back in the 90s the GT was a high 14 to mid 15 sec car depending on which one you bought. The Z28 and Z28 SS were high 13s. If you wanted to bang heads against the Zs you had to spring extra cash for the Cobra which was super expensive. Even then the Zs were outrunning them. In the 2000s the trend continued. In fact it got even worse. There were versions of the 350Z and even the damn Honda Accord that, if optioned appropriately, were faster than GTs. So you had to spring for the Cobra and Mach 1s. And now yet again we are right back where we were. Anybody can go to a Chevy dealership and buy a reasonably priced ZL1 brand new and get it for low $60K. And it will come with a shit ton of options as standard. And the GT500 is even more expensive. In fact the gap in price is like 2-3 times as much as it was back then. So how is this Mustang THIS expensive?

One of my buddies told me the site is shut down right now. They claim it is for maintenance or something. LOL!! I do not go over there but I heard lots of stuff was going down and it was getting crazy.

IF it is on a prepped track and IF several other conditions are met. On the streets or on track with less prep and in less than ideal conditions I don't think the GT00 will do as well. It would still catch up but it would be past 120 MPH. And of course, only up to 180 MPH. After that it isn't a race anymore...
