Well sure, but that's just progress and technological advancement. I mean the 2.7T Tripower 4-cylinder going into the new trucks makes almost as much power as the old Tripower V8 engines in Pontiacs long ago.

Yes, I’m well aware. Malibu was a trim level on the Chevelle. Calling Chevelles “Malibu” would be like calling Camaros “SS”.

This is true. GM does that a lot though. Trims of popular vehicles become their own model.

You two just reminded me of how incredibly dumb the 'SS' name was for that rebadged Holden sedan.

But there was a Chevelle Malibu SS... That's would be like a Camaro SS 1LE? Or like a ZL1?

I agree....what I was really getting at is that GM has had a few examples of the use of the SS badge on cars with otherwise less than stellar factory installed engines from its past, from the 60's to the 2000's. The in-line 6 from the past takes the cake in my book as one of the low points.

You had the 283, 302, 327, 350, 400 small blocks along with the 348, 366, 396, 400, 409, 427, and 454 big blocks with various hp ratings in each model year from GM. The rpo codes were your ticket to the hot versions.

They had to have the Chevelle name first....A "C" was required as the first letter of each model line's name...(At least for quite a while, that is...)

Which raises a question....was Impala originally a trim level of Caprice or was it the other way around? And what about BelAir? Did that spring off of a C-named model?

Don't forget the Nova

Bhobbs 08-02-2018 10:31 PM

Wasn't the Nova originally called Chevy II?

Pretty sure Caprice came after as a separate trim/model.....Impala, Bel-Air, and Biscayne were all trims of the Chevrolet car....

Nova was a name under Chevy II....Corvair, Corvette,....El Camino was a stretch...but it had the C in Camino....Monte Carlo had the C in Carlo....I recall they tried to hang on to the "C" first theme, but I guess it just disappeared at some point....not sure....

Just going off of an every-fading memory of useless trivia...lol...

I was digging the hood scoop though :sad0147:

Mr_Draco 08-07-2018 08:54 PM

The hood scoop isn't the only thing that is different. One seems to have a more sportier front fascia, rear fascia and exhaust tips also are different. I think we may be looking at two different trim levels.
