Patience! The GT500 is coming.

The GT350 and GT350R are obviously designed purely for the road course. Especially with the high reving engine and the carbon fiber and aero pieces on the R. I would think that the GT500 is going to be focused on being more of a touring car with a ton of horsepower and great for the drag strip. Similar to the Gen 5 ZL1, it was decent on the road course but the Z/28 was the road course Camaro. Similarly I think the GT500 will be decent on a road course but the GT350(R) is the road course Mustang.

I bet this means that the c7 Grand Sport is at around 7:23 just quicker than the 991 gt3 and 991 turbo S. To me that puts the ZL1 very close to the GS on the road course and a touch faster on the drag strip which is perfect. Amazing times for Camaro fans! Big Wing (what people are calling a z/28), if it's based off a ZL1 could be right on top of the GS.

That is freaking incredible.

A couple of notes....

The Nordschleife is a 12.9mi long course. On short track like we have in the US, any car within a second of each other is considered comparable in performance. Those tracks are usually something between 2.5 and 3 miles long. SO.....the Nurburgring Nordschleife course is approximately 3 of those laps in one....Very arduous. It also means that the time differences need to be scaled up.

Anything on that track within 3.5 seconds of each other is of comparable performance.

Here are some historical times to chew on.

7:12.13 - 2010 Dodge Viper ACR
7:19.63 - 2012 Chevy Corvette ZR1(sport Cup)
7:22.68 - 2012 Chevy Corvette Z06
7:24.44 - 2008 Pagani Zonda F
7:25.21 - 2010 Ferarri Enzo
7:26.40 - 2009 Chevy Corvette ZR1 (stock tires)
7:28.00 - 2016 Lamborghini Huracán
7:29.60 - 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1
7:32.00 - Porsche 911 GT2
7:32.92 - Ferarri 458 Italia
7:33.33 - 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS
7:33.55 - 2008 Koenigsegg CCX
7:35.00 - 2015 McLaren 650S Spider
7:37.40 - 2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28
7:38.00 - 2010 Lexus LFA
7:40.00 - 2005 Bugatti Veyron 16.4
7:41.27 - 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1

Also worth noting...the Corvette ZR1 hit a top speed of 178 on the back straight of the 'Ring. The Z/28 hit 160, and the last-gen ZL1 hit 168......The new ZL1 reached 180.

It still hurts my head to think how Chevy and Ford are both managing lap times that used to be dominated by Ferraris and Lamborghinis, and at literally 1/4 or even less the price. $240k for an 458 Italia vs $60 for a ZL1, and the ZL1 still beats it.

I think the Italians need to step up their game a little bit. Now all their cars are good for is bragging rights due to price tags and exclusivity. I'm sure there are some tracks where cars like the 458 have an upper hand, but the gap is closing very quickly. 10 years ago, the idea of a Camaro pulling this off would have been laughable.

If the Z/28 is just a tricked out ZL1, how much faster do you think it could be?

Oh I know. I was being facetious. I've seen guys over there try to argue that the GT350R is better than the SS like it's on the same level. That's where I was going with that.

I'm not knocking the GT350. It's an awesome car. I expect the GT500 to be an awesome machine as well. Just taking some friendly jabs at our "rivals" over there.

Either side you're on; It's a great time to be a car guy.

Nothing to say other than that is amazing. Well done and way to improve the breed Chevy.

AFAIK, other than both cars being based on a Camaro, they actually should not share too much from a parts bin perspective. Z/28 will probably have a totally different engine, suspension setup, and curb weight if it's anything like the 5th gen at least.

For this generation, the ZL1 is being marketed as a high HP that also happens to be track capable. The Z/28 is a purpose built track car. We'll have to see what numbers they wind up pulling off. It's really hard to speculate, but if the ZL1 smashed the speeds of the old Z/28 by 8 seconds, the 6th gen Z/28 is going to be pretty f***ing fast.

The bang for buck is staggering !

Thor142 10-24-2016 12:10 PM

Holy ****

Absolutely amazing. I figured it would nudge out the ol' gen 5 Z/28 by a second or two but 8? Wow!

I suspect the times were not what they were expecting, maybe they ran into cooling issues. Who knows. But GM loves to post 'Ring times, so for them NOT to post the C7 Z06 times with the car in its third model year is a bit odd.

Yeah, I remember that. I thought it had to do with the Ring putting a stop on timed laps.

Fantastic

That's the PR answer but the sanctions have been lifted for a while now.
