This is what I did. Not worth the ticket here in NY. I have gotten pulled over numerous times, I even came home from work, to find a ticket on my car that was sitting in the train parking lot.

I did the same, but with the 3/4" gray 3M (red backing) double-sided tape to avoid holes. I also trim the perimeter of the plate about 3/16" to remove the recessed flange but keep the slight radius edge. Been doing this with my cars for 6 years now no problems. They are a bear to remove years later, but any residue cleans off easily once they pop free.

Got the Sto 'n Go from PHASTEK, installed it while in Austin last week, yanked it off and tossed it in the trunk when I got home!
