50th Design: Thoughts from Adam Barry

Found on facebook:

It was an honor to be the lead exterior designer of this historic Camaro. The goal of the exterior design was to project more of a GT, or high end sport look, rather than a bad boy race car. To this end we used desaturated colors in selective spots, added performance attributes in the frt splitter and high flow grills, and accented the brakes calipers. The all new specific wheels were designed to project motion, and the open spoke design allows you to see the brakes. Can't wait to see one on the road very soon.

Is there an actual performance gain from the grill, or is it just cosmetic? This is the first time Ive seen it referred to as a "performance attribute"

Maybe they consider a cosmetic enhancement that doesn't detract from performance to be a "performance attribute"?

Thank goodness for that. I was afraid they'd use poly-unsaturated complex carbo-hydrated colors....

Adam is a talented cat, as a designer myself, I have always respected his work within the GM confines. The 6th gen is his best yet.
Car looks good.

Sorry, but they dropped the ball on the 50th. They should have done more, this is no better than the 45th edition...too bad.

I have to agree they should have waited and made the jump to the Gen 6 as part of the 50th. Done the z28 and ZL1 all for the 50th in one big Shot.

45th is paid off now. Do I just collect anniversary editions from here on out? I love the design. Not sure what folks expect from these special editions.

Agree. These special editions have always been appearance packages. Maybe they'll offer it on multiple trim levels like they did on the Corvette centennial edition.

I had a 1976 Trans Am 50th (Y82) for a long time but am not interested in this anymore. The cars are special enough

It's available as a 2LT, and 2SS. The interior has a unique design to it that requires different seat covers, etc.

I don't think it's a performance enhancement grill. Unless it was a little deeper, something like what the Nissan GT-R NISMO has

I like that the designers are going for a high end sports car look, but in my opinion the Gen 6 Camaro looks more boy racer than ever before. I have heard others say it looks like a high school kids car and I kind of agree. Don't get me wrong I will probably buy a ZL1 or 1LE, but some of the optional stripes, color combinations, wheels and rear spoiler combined with turbo charged 4 cylinder undermine efforts gain an upscale image. I get it that Chevrolet is trying to appeal to the broadest market looking to purchase a $25-65,000 sports car, but its hard to compare Camaro to BMW, Audi and Porsche (other than performance) when such low end models are commonplace on the road.
