V6 to V4 with A8

Is there any way to tell when V4 mode kicks in with the V6 A8 and standard gauge cluster?

Mine displays it on the screen when you stroll down to the gas amount display I believe, using the arrows on the righ-hand side of your steering wheel.

If it kicks off 2 cylinders you're driving it wrong.

It's called active fuel management in the owners manual. It only applies to auto transmissions. It shows in the fuel management cluster when you are in 4 cylinder mode.

Yeah, just look for the grayish "V6" or green "V4" label on any MPG info page (I typically flip to instant MPG display on the rare occcasions I want to check cylinder activation/deactivation).

It absolutely can be felt, V4 mode feels like driving an underpowered sedan with little torque to show. Then again, it yields 45-50 mpg at roughly 55-60 mph and isn't overly intrusive.

I find the pavement feels less smooth in v4 mode. Very minor vibrations, not like a rumble strip but like mildly less smooth pavement. Oddly my v4 shudder on switch went away, though I very occasionally get a rumble strip effect. Coasting at certain speeds close to 1000rpm can cause minor vibrations to the point of annoyance though, notice it in school zones and behind people going just under 50km/h (30mph).

Honestly would love if they gave me 1000 bucks for gas and turned off v4 mode. Voila, less warranty work! If v4 mode saves 10% fuel economy net of all things, I’d be losing out after 4 years, but I hate the feature — it’s too buggy.
I hear you, the ride is indeed slightly rougher in v4 mode. FYI earlier I started a thread on the v4 mode activation/deactivation criteria, and got the informative answer below.

All in all, it seems to deactivate almost immediately when more torque is needed, and I can understand why---if it didn't, likely much more people would complain about sluggishness. I'm considering the trifecta tune, because that makes a clear distinction between tour and sport mode, namely it disables cylinder deactivation in the latter, which makes a lot of sense to me.

the factors i think matter are engine load and requested torque. If it's above a certain limit it switches to V6. It also switches to V6 to preempt the need for full power like when you start downshifting, taking sharp turns at speed etc.

Basically if it's an activity that would show the decreased power of V4 mode, the ECM avoids it by switching to V6 before you have something to complain about.

I wonder how much fuel it actually saves. I expected better MPG with the V6, A8 being a six cylinder, with the fuel management system and I drive with a very light foot, cruising at 50-55 MPH, 1500 RPM most of the time yet I get only 24 MPG- at best and when I monitor the meter. My other car a WRX- semi fast car- 4 cylinder turbo, no fuel management system and with AWD I drive light footed the same way and get 32 around town and 34-40 on the highway. I'm afraid if I drive the Camaro any harder the mileage might dip in the mid teens.

Driving the I-5 from Canada to LA I was able to get 28 mpg average with a 75 mph average speed, so I'd say the Active Fuel Management is great for road trips with a 455hp V8

I've seen the message once since I owned the car, i guess that's a statement about how I drive.

Same here except just to Bellingham for Costco. The 4 cylinder shut-off makes this thing more fuel efficient than my old V6

So V4 isn't active over 55 MPH?
