I would love to go ahead and Cam it, but I currently don't have the funds to spare $3000 for a kit. Oil pressure never dropped. I've been trying to sell a set of wheels for months to free up the funds, with no luck.

Not to hijack a the thread but just out of curiosity while it's a topic, on average, about how much are reputable shops charging nowadays for just a basic cam package with install?

A shop near me, Lethal Performance of Texas in New Braunfels, quoted me $5300 for labor... I think GPI is a little over $3000 for labor.

if it starts up and runs fine (but ticks), id say you're ok. bear in mind you can't use aftermarket lifters with the stock camshaft in your camaro.
post pics of the damage when you get it apart. good luck.

I know, I'd be rebuilding the valvetrain with all GM parts. I wish GM made an AFM delete cam that was the same specs so I could run non AFM lifters.

yeah idk why all the afm delete stuff is so much different. i think they'd sell quite a few non afm stock LT1 camshafts.
the only story i have about that is i raced another camaro like mine with the exact same mods, except mine had an ati damper on it. 2" headers, msd, tb, cai etc. he said the car had aftermarket lifters & afm delete camshaft. he also told me it made 580 whp, so idk what was actually done to the car (it didn't make 580 lol). i fd around from 40 mph and got left off the hit. caught back up and ultimately put 4-5 cars on him before he gave up, around 120 mph or so. my car made 441. i think there were a lot of contributing factors, and honestly i felt kind of bad for the kid.

$3000 before the cam package? Just curious because I want to do something but not trying to spend more than maybe $4K out the gate. I don't plan on keeping the car for more than a couple years. Eventually want to get a ZLE. Just want some chop with a bit more power over stock to hold me over.

Yes $3000 in labor alone. The package that I would get from GPI is about $3000 in parts... on top of labor.

Didn't you just get your car put back together after asking about Wilkes Performance in Alabama?

No remember that was me making a post on behalf of my friend who had issues with Wilkes. That was about a 2007 Z06.

Man I feel for you on this! Especially a friend you're close enough with to let them scream on your car and them making a mistake such as this.. Ive let my wife drive my car around neighborhood once. Im glad to hear you're shipping it back. Luckily you have the means to fix it (I assume. Hope hes offered to chip in or flat out take care of it.
The thumb down grip for 3rd to 4th is a great idea. Id never tried it. I once did the "money shift" in my 5th gen while playing with M3 and bounced off limiter hard. Was probably 6k in 3rd and it was okay. The LS3 valvetrain held up🙌 |

Yeah, I currently have the funds to do a stock rebuild, but I'm leaning towards going heads/cam since it will be torn down anyways. However, I don't have the funds for that. I'm trying to part with some of my belongings, both in the classifieds section (set of wheels and a sim rig), to free up some funds. My friend offered to pay for the rebuild but I value my friendship more than the car. I don't want it to turn into a "where's my money" type of deal. We agreed that he will pay half of the cost of a complete stock valvetrain rebuild, so about $750-800. I will be doing labor myself.
Here is a video of it getting loaded up. Ticking is much louder than when I left it. You can really hear the ticking at the 13-ish second mark in the video:
