If you were to do it all over again - Mod the SS vs Buying ZL1
What would you do between those two choices?

I dont have a zl1, but i prob would buy a zl1 and mod that instead. If i had to choose modded SS vs STOCK zl1, id still take the SS probably. The cost of modding the SS above a certain power level likely makes more cost effective to just start with a zl1.

Now that I already have a modded SS, I'd experiment with modding a ZL1 for a change

Mod the SS.. the 650HP I had on my Z was a bit too much for me to safely explore in and around where I live.
Just personally speaking, I think a small bump to 500-525 HP would be perfect for my street use. |

I would do ZL1 strictly for aesthetic reasons. Front bumper/skirts/hood/wing look soooo much better, and I don't see a reason to try to chase ZL1 power in SS when you can have it and it be under warranty

Great poll.
I will be buying new in 8 months or so and am constantly going back and forth between saving money with a H/C/I 1SS 1LE vs getting a ZL1.

When I had my 5th gen I should have just bought a ZL1. Then just do a couple small modifications and leave it alone. Instead I had an SS 1LE and decided to twin turbo, cam, and everything else lol. Then ended up selling it with not very many miles on it. My 6th gen SS I only did intake and exhaust and enjoyed the hell out of it, put many miles on it until the oil pump decided to quit.

I had a 2016 2SS that I bought new and was planning on keeping to eventually put a supercharger on and a few other mods but got in a frontal accident 6 months after purchase. It was repaired but problems with the wiring and other issues were costing me money to have repairs done in addition to my monthly payment. Getting really frustrated too so I started looking for a new 2019 1SS 1LE and found a very low mileage used 2017 ZL1 for a good price and used the 2016 as a trade in. The rest is history and no regrets buying that almost new 2 year old ZL1 back in 2019.

Mind if I ask why you didn't go ZL1? Plenty of pros and cons on both sides, it's a tougher decision than it should be for me.

In other words, would you pay $70K for a ZL1 or would you have likely just gone 1SS 1LE today?

I owned an SS. I went ZL1 this time around. IMO, the car is too fast to fully enjoy on the street but I still enjoy owning it and having the extra power for short bursts. I also prefer the ZL1 front end styling over the SS. If you are comparing a 2SS 1LE to a ZL1 you are looking at about an $18k difference and about $1400-2100 of that depending on the transmission is gas guzzler tax. So, you could add a Supercharger and other mods to an SS and give up the warranty but when your done you won’t really increase the value of the car, unless you have the right buyer, but more than likely the value will stay flat or lower. So, while the ZL1 initial cost is higher it should retain its value better over time vs a modded SS.

Probably the SS 1LE but with the price of everything including aftermarket parts and labor plus the car, it might be better to consider a ZL1 over the SS. Do cost analysis on parts/labor on mods to an SS that would get you ZL1 hp and you might find at present time it maybe cost effective to just buy a ZL1 and do some simple mods to it. That’s my advice and also if you buy a new ZL1 it will be the last supercharged Camaro that is in production in a year or so.

I went through this same buying cycle with the C7 Grand sport vs Z06. I went with the Grand Sport since it had the Z looks and enough power but I always wished I paid a little more and got the Z06 instead.
