I wish you would do it. Then let me know if it was worth it. I'm looking at getting a ZL1 for a weekend car just because anyone can have a SS and I want to feel special.

I would say you have to test drive one and then decide if it is worth it. I wish it was easier. I can't decide on anything at this point, SS 1LE or ZL1, manual or auto, new or used.

Thats is what separates the boys from the men. 650HP is no joke when you actually get to drive one.

The CTS-V is out right a bad ass car but if I had to choose one between the two, it would be the ZL1.

Weekend car my ass! I have a 2hr/day commute and the last thing that I want to do on the weekend is drive for no real reason and then have a expensive car I'm paying for sit unused most of the time, depreciate, go out of style, and become outdated as new models come out. If I ever got a ZL1 it would be my daily weather permitting. Why pay for a ZL1 and suffer driving a lesser vehicle daily? Stupid. Use that payment money and buy some real estate instead....

And to the OP, if you want it and can afford it, I would get it. You only live once. But I wouldn't waste money on one just to let it sit unused or to take a joyride here and there on the weekend. I'd enjoy it as much as possible.

Don't do it. the grass is always greener. The SS is one of the best sports muscle cars values in the world. The ZL1 is just a little more of everything.

You will take a huge hit on the value of your SS and ZL1 values are dropping. The best idea is to wait a while, sell your SS yourself and buy a lightly used ZL1 if you must have one. I did that and bought a used 5th gen ZL1 a few months old with 3 K miles for $12K off sticker.

If you figure you will take at least a $10+K hit on your SS and another $10K hit on the ZL1 when you drive off the lot does it make sense? But if you don't care about money just do it.

words to listen to... I took my 2SS, dropped a supercharger and cam kit, methanol, and exhaust. My 2SS will run circles around the ZL1.

Also, keep in mind there is a class action lawsuit against GM because the LT4 engines are prone to overheating and shutting down the car after only a couple laps...

And pay out of pocket for ALL issues if it happens before 3 years / 36k miles (or 5 years / 100k miles with extended warranty). Not to mention if we want to compare mods... The LT4 potential is at least 200 rwhp more than the LT1 thanks to already having forged internals, fuel supply and LT4 itself. SC alone on LT4 = 700+ to the wheels on pump gas for ZL1. Add heads/cam/corn 900+. But yeah, heavily modded SS will run circles around a stock ZL1 but same mods on a ZL1, you wouldn't even know what just passed you. Tit for tat.

As for the overheating... some have it, some don't and LT4 SC also has 4 versions. The issues were happening on the gen1 version and fixed gradually at the last version for C7 zo6's (2017s, IC bricks angles and larger lid also hood liner is different) and the ZL1 and CTSV ones are also different in which do not have a single overheating issue. I know multiple people with different LT4's that didn't have a single issue, and some C7 zo7 owners that did (frankly, 2015s and 2016s, more so '15 models though like the class action suit). So it's all over exaggerated... It shouldn't have happened to begin with if you ask me, it was just a rush job but at least they fixed it and have fixes available for customers whether it's buying the SC lid upgrade kit or buying a new model year.

As for the OP, I am not even going to go into the positives... It's a crap load lol. Not just the power... So... just the negative things to think about when it comes to upgrading. Insurance is much, much higher, payment can/is be higher (depends on $$$ down and vs what you owe on your loan if applicable), MPG is much lower than SS (insert who cares about MPG comment here but some like myself love the engineering marvel of having a crap load of power and better MPG than commuter cars... ).

As for comfort, 2SS with MRC is SLIGHTLY more comfortable on the road vs the ZL1. Pure physics can explain this, wider wheel base = more contact on road = more feed back from road. Now, when I say ZL1 is less comfortable... I am not talking about the ZL1 1LE which is a pure track pack plus wider wheel base, but you'll notice more from the bumps and crevices of the road on the zl1 vs SS. It ain't terrible by any means but just a point...

Value hit is much higher on the ZL1 than the SS, so if you plan on getting the ZL1 1LE or the "Z28" in 2-3 years, don't do it. Cars are depreciating assets but the higher the cost the more it depreciates.
