I can't believe my son did this...

Call it click bait, but it's a true title. I whole heartedly can't and didn't want to believe this was a situation I would ever have to deal with...

I mean it's one thing for your kid to touch a car in excitement, or because they are young and don't know any better. But climbing on a car multiple times and being caught on Camera saying they won't get caught when they knew I had a camera live and they simply knew better.

My son now has it ingrained into his soul that touching cars is a no no. God I hope that is a true statement.

Kids do stupid shit all the time. One of the joys of parenting. Didn't listen to the video, but my advice would be: Make it a teachable moment. Have him clean it, maybe lose a night of video games while doing it.

One of the best things I ever did as a parent was instill a sense of "things" value to you my kids. They learn that, they know when things get damaged they need to be replaced / fixed, and that the cost is on them.

Yikes!

I think you handled that very well.

Whenever my daughter brings the grandkids over (2 and 3 year old girls) they come in through the garage. She always says "don't touch pop pop's car" when they are walking through.

True story - Was at my favorite pub with a bunch of riding buds. Had my brand new, highly customized, Road King parked outside. Guy comes up to us and asks if it is OK for his kid (prob about 3-4 yrs. old) to sit on one of the bikes. I figured "what the hell go ahead and sit him on mine". He's on there for about 3 minutes and they leave. When we get ready to move on, I looked at my bike and there were little greasy hand prints all over the gas tank, saddle bags and some of the chrome. Lesson learned. A week or so later, same pub, same guy with the same kid comes up to me and asks if it is OK for the kid to sit on my bike again. I politely told him no that I had just detailed it. Unbelievably, the father gets pissed. Oh well.

The problem with this world is stupidity.
I'm not saying there should be penalties for stupidity,
but why don't we just take the warning labels off everything and let the problem solve itself.

seen the video.
Granted you can't control what kids do out of your sight even for 1 minute. I have a rule that no bikes, or any type of equipment other than my cars and tool box. If they are interested in tools (which I am glad they are) I watch them like a hawk.

This is why I want to plan ahead and get a locked, detached garage before I ever have kids. Now just to convince my neighborhood that they'll look the other way and not enforce the restrictive covenant that forbids this. Lol.

Garages are fun places. It's unlike the rest of the home. A place to explore. A place where you can create things, where the parents do their projects and in turn get viewed by children as mad scientists. It's the closest a kid has to a secret lab of sorts. I want my future kids to enjoy this space with an understanding of what's dangerous, but having a detached shed as a true "no no zone" would be better. They're gonna eventually need a place to do soldering when I create a scheme for a family run computer business to overtake Apple.

If my parents knew the truth about what I was up to as a kid...

I may not be alive today.
