Old Fogies driving new Camaros
This forum is my social medium. I am not a frequenter of Twitter and I'm in the minority of the planet that doesn't do Facebook. Until tonight, I assumed (and am probably right) that I'm older than most here who write about their heavily modified, black wheeled, racing striped cars. Then I read the entire thread:
http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=501106 To my pleasant surprise, more seasoned drivers in their late 50's to their 70's were weighing in. Hey if the Camaro itself is 50, I should have expected there were many enthusiasts that are even older. I'm 58 and got the muscle car bug when my uncle bought a new 1968 Firebird 400 with a "4 on the floor". It was pure muscle, the only extra was an FM radio with a rear speaker. Every component under the hood was easily identifiable. There was no AC, and not even power steering, brakes, let alone windows. But as a kid in that passenger seat, the acceleration was intoxicating. When I was old enough to drive, my uncle was willing to pass that prize to me. My dad had less adventurous ideas and wouldn't let me have it. I never got over my attraction to American muscle and got my first thing close with an '89 Mustang GT. In '94, I got a Z28. Living where snow occurs sometimes into April, I couldn't count on RWD to get me to work every day. I had to settle for more practical, less exciting alternatives. Then a crazy thing happened in 2013. I entered a supermarket chain sponsored contest and, against tall odds, I won a car. The details of that event are best saved for a separate thread. It was a V6 Camaro automatic coupe. I traded up for a 2SS M6 convertible. It was a luxury I wouldn't have bought on my own, and didn't realize how much I'd enjoy. Most of the miles put on it we're from drives taken, top down, deliberately planned for the purpose of taking it for a ride. I'm not a big believer in these sort of things, but it's nice to think my dad, who died several years ago, had a hand in my good fortune of winning that contest. In retrospect, the somewhat reckless driving of my youth may well have killed me or someone else, in my uncle's radial tired Pontiac. It took me a very long time, but I eventually realized my dad was looking out for me. I sold my '13 to a co-worker a few months ago and now have a '17 2SS convertible. I love it, and now enjoy knowing there are many other "young at heart drivers" sharing their enthusiasm at this nice forum.

I've had my ZL1 for going on two years and I just turned 54 on July 9th...I have always loved muscle cars but marriage and having 4 children was not the proper time to fulfill my specific wants...I did have a 1985 Monte Carlo SS that I loved and recently gave it to my oldest son, it was willed to him so I decided to give it to him to see in my remaining years if he would love and care for it as I did...Then as I approached retirement I decided that I would purchase my last vehicle which just happened to be my ZL1, which I absolutely love...So circumstances forced me into an early medical retirement, so this may not be the last muscle car that I purchase going forward...So raising the kids took precedence over everything else, but now that they are all adults I can focus solely on my wants and the things that bring me joy...

I'm 63 and have had more Camaros than any other car I've owned. I currently own a '15 Z/28 and someday will have a 6th Gen of some flavor.
I can't see myself ever not having a sports/muscle car as long as I can drive!

I'm 30, and hope I'm as awesome as most of the older guys on this forum when I get up in age.

There is a thread on here someplace where everyone stated their ages. You'd be surprised at how many old farts there are who had muscle cars back in the 60s. I think I recall one guy that was 78. As for me, 68 and starting to get the mod bug again. My car as a teen was a 67 Motion Performance SS396 Chevelle; used to ride the streets on M&H slicks and would eat goats for breakfast/lunch/dinner.

I'm 60 and plan to buy a Camaro when I retire in a couple of months. I'm leaning towards the 1LE.

I'm 71 and never lost my love for the sport car. My first car I brought coming home from the Army was a 1969 SS 396 Chevelle. My second car was a 1973 Camaro. Due to being married and having children the sports car didn't fit into our lifestyle. Now that I'm a widower I'm reliving my youth with the 2016 2LT RS.

You are as young as you feel. But never stop learning.

I'm gonna be 53. Started off driving Mopar, but been a Chevy guy since 83. Actually took my drivers test in a 79 Camaro. First Camaro was a 87 Iroc, then my next Camaro came along in 2012 which i still have, also had a 67 Pro Street Camaro which i got rid of and now got myself a 2017 ZL1 with 10speed. Have had several other cars over the years, but all Chevy's. For me the ZL1 i just got is a dream car. Handles so well and plenty of power. With the 10 speed it just keeps pulling.
Wish i had a lift at my house cause I find I cannot do a lot of the stuff on cars that i used to be able to without paying the price the next day , but i still try.

63 yeas old here. Been into cars since I was a kid putting together plastic models. I've been fortunate to have had a few muscle cars and many sports cars. I keep cars a minimum of 10 years, so when it's time for a switch, it must be something that I know will be interesting and capture me to the point where I have no desires to do something financially bad (for me) and switch early.
The '16 2SS is that car for me as it spoke to me while the Mustang GT with PP did not. Not into the Dodge line up as handling is also important, although I like their retro look. And who's an old foggie? :-) |
