Steering wheel removal, WTF????

Hey all,

Just got a new Alcantara steering wheel, and immediately tried to install it. Short story: Couldn't remove the airbag module. Yes, I've seen Lethal's video here:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tRzFiM2cGYo

I 've also read this tutorial from a fellow forum member:
http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=484293

I was simply not able to remove the airbag. Me and my local indie mechanic tried, for an hour. Got the clips loose on both sides using screwsrivers, and could even stick my fingers under the air bag, but couldn't yank it out. Pulled, yanked, moved, tried TWO screwdrivers simultaneously. What. The. F?

Ive replaced steering wheels before. Once in my golfTDI when upgrading to a Golf R steering wheel, and again on my NC Miata when adding cruise control. But this Camaro airbag is by-far the most stubborn.

Can someone who has done it before offer any tips?

How do you remove the chrome on the steering wheel? I watched the video of removing the air bag and it still looks like you cant remove the chrome even with the air bag off.

Well, its a good thing youre in Canada. My New York dealer charges $169 USD per hour of labor. Yikes!

Will keep at it, and report back if I have any success.

I don't know why you couldn't get it. Using two pocket sized screwdrivers inserted into the holes behind the spokes the air bag will come off.

With the flat side of the blade facing you, insert it into the hole and locate the retaining spring. You will feel the tension. You don't need anything more than the screwdrivers and it will pop up on its own. Don't do it Lethals way, you can sit in the drivers seat and gently remove the bag.

It is taxing and even tries the everyday tech, but with patience and feel it pops of. It generally takes me 10-15 minutes on any car to get it, it's just the way they are.

I've pulled a few of these off and agree with glenB. It's a little fiddly, but certainly can be done. I actually use one screwdriver and do o ne side at a time applying pull pressure to the bag to hold the one side in while going to the other. The spring is thin, so it takes a few shots.

Ok, I'll try having the flat part of the screwdriver facing me as I sit in the driver's seat. Car is at the dealer now for an alignment, so I'll try when i get the car back.

Hey Devnull,

Thats something i didnt try. I'll give it a shot pulling the one side, while using the screw driver to unclip the other.

Cheers!
