Any help would be surely appreciated!

Vacuum with a small attachment like a lint lizard and suck the sand out.

I'd try driving through a car wash with the windows open. Or maybe a little compressed air?

If you have a air tank blow it out with compressed air

Get a can of compressed air at your local computer store.

This is what I would do. The can comes with a tiny "straw" (like on a can of WD-40) that you can feed right down into your ignition key slot and blow out the sand (or whatever).

Assuming the ignition assembly is somehow encased in a "closed" cylinder of sorts (maybe it isn't), those little air cans produce plenty of "blow" for the job. If it is sand in there, it should be forced back out through the key opening. If not, OP just wants to get rid of the gritty crunchy noise when he puts his key in. So what if it just blows in deeper - So long as the key slot area if cleaned?

I think you should try sucking first and if that doesn't work then blow.

Like everyone is saying a vacuum should work. It probably got in there because the key portion had grease on it from the factory so over time it would stick to it in your pocket and get stuck in the ignition.
