2018 ZL1 Rear Differential Fill Bolt

I’ve hit 3000 miles on my 2018 ZL1 and keep reading about how we should be changing the rear diff fluid at 1500. I didn’t want to pay the ridiculous price for having this done at the dealership so I bought everything I needed to do this myself: trolley jack, jack stands, oil pan, and diff fluid.

I got the car jacked up and couldn’t for the life of me get the top (fill) bolt to budge. Tried WD40 and different angles but it wasn’t moving. Has anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions for me? I’m just using a standard socket wrench with a short extension.

I would like to avoid going to the dealership, especially since I’ve already forked over the money for all this equipment that I probably wouldn’t have purchased otherwise.

Try bumping the end of ratchet with a rubber mallet. I remember having to do that on mine.

If my next statement offends you that's not my intention, however, being upside down under a car a LOT of folks mistake counterclockwise for clockwise (righty tightly, lefty loosie).

No offense taken; was definitely turning the correct direction. Double checked that several times because I have never had this issue with a bolt before.

It'll break loose, I used a 1/2 inch ratchet and had to lean on it a little in addition bumping it with a mallet.

Sharp blow with your heel of your hand should do it. A 1/2" ratchet with a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter makes life easier.

1/2 torque wrench with an extension. If that doesn't break it loose, something is wrong!

1\2" Breaker bar or put a metal pipe on the end of your ratchet. Never use a Torque wrench to remove anything unless you don't like it anymore.

Breaker bar! Please don't use a torque wrench. You'll screw up the calibration.

If you don't have a breaker bar, a piece of copper pipe or anything else you have that can be put on the end of the ratchet for leverage will work.

The toughest part of this job is using the pump, to put the replacement fluid back in. My dealer wanted $140 to do this service!
