Possible transmission issue? Car getting stuck then jerking forward?
Hi all,
I've had my 2017 2SS automatic for about a year now. I've noticed an issue for the last couple weeks and I'm not sure what it could be, I'm hoping it's not a transmission issue. Basically, a couple times a day, when I go from braking to accelerating, my car will get stuck or caught for about a second at low rpm, and then jerk forward and be okay. It doesn't happen constantly but happens at least two times a drive. I'll be braking at a light, or something like that, and then when I go to accelerate, my car will make the sound and not move as if I'm still braking or something but trying to accelerate, only for about a second, and then all of a sudden jerk forward and be normal after that. Again, this doesn't happen every time I go from braking to accelerating, but happens roughly two times every time I drive the car. I plan on making an appointment with Chevy really soon but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what the issue could be. My car is completely factory stock except for all-season tires I put on ~4 months ago and some cosmetic changes. Thanks!

Step one: Check trans fluid level and inspect for leaks.

I found mine down a quart and a quarter after transmission line recall. They never refilled the fluid that was lost.

Wow something is definitely ****ed.
All the service centers are already closed for the day. Going to call first thing in the morning and make an appointment. This is my only car so I'll have to baby it for a few days until the appointment. *Edit* A dealership a bit out of my way was still open. Managed to replicate the issue. Mechanic doesn't think it's related to transmission fluid, but they just took it in to look at things.

Alright ignore what I wrote earlier about the engine sound being off, that was me misinterpreting something.
However the frequency of the issue has increased today. Anyway so here's what happened at the dealership: I drove with the mechanic and the issue was replicated twice. He said "it feels like a harsh gear shift, not sure what exactly is causing this, but we'll do a transmission reset." I waited a while, then they bring my car back. The rep tells me they didn't do anything. He said the TCM showed everything as being okay. I told him clearly something is wrong but he said the system said they shouldn't do anything so they won't. I was pretty irritated by this point as clearly something was wrong, and they initially acknowledged such, and the rep tells me "every car is different, yours is probably still breaking in." I told him it already has almost 10k miles on it, and that this is a new issue, not something that's been happening since I got it. He again reiterated "every car is different, yada yada." I told him that's not a valid reason and clearly something is wrong. He said he has a document which shows some details (posted below). The document doesn't even accurately address my issue, as it states it only happens once or twice right after starting the vehicle. At first ~3-4 weeks ago sure it was like that, but the frequency has been increasing. It happened every 10-ish minutes today on my commute. Anyway, before I left I got corporate's number from him. I called them and spoke to a rep who told me a "senior advisor" will contact me within the next 48 hours. I'll just have to wait for now but hopefully I get an answer. If Chevy doesn't do anything then I'll go to a private mechanic and get a diagnosis.

They didn't even check for low fluid level and potential leaks then, as @camaro5 and @Brianw36 suggested above?

Nope, they didn't do anything.
I did some more searching on the forums and found several threads with other people having the same issue. There doesn't seem to be any guaranteed fix, although some people say a transmission fluid flush did the trick. Hopefully if I bug corporate I can get them to at least try something.

My 8 speed auto has been doing this since spring of last year when it had around 2 - 3000 miles on it. Mostly when it is cold. The dealer had already taken care of the torque converter issue by this point and did a relearn on the transmission module. When I complained about this issue the dealer immediately thought that I was feeling the hill start assist (holds the brakes momentarily to keep the car from rolling back, even on automatic models). I told them that the hill start assist was not active when this issue was happening. They basically dismissed it and I haven't taken it back for this issue since. I'm just waiting for it to get worse or it finally fail before I take it back in. Good luck with GM customer assistance, the reps can sometimes be infuriating to deal with. Keep us posted on how it goes. These 8 speeds are trash, glad the 2019 + models will have 10 speeds. Wishful thinking, maybe if it does fail they'll just put a 10 speed in lol jk

FYI, my car has 11,200 miles on it and I've had it a little over a year as well. Judging what the bulletin says, it pretty much says deal with it, it's normal, which is what my dealer told me.
I personally have found that putting the transmission in sport mode helps firm up the shifts a little bit and the slipping feels like it happens a little less often. It seems GM is content with how this transmission is programmed and operates. It's probably going to be really tough to show there is an issue until the car has many more miles on. By that time, it will likely be out of warranty and our problem anyways. I'd be curious to know if a transmission shop could adjust the line pressure a little bit to make the clutch engagement feel more solid. |
