its not as if GM just found out that many states require front license plates. Do you think they could spend 20 minutes engineering a nice solution instead of just drilling holes? Jeesh

It seems a simple task, until you consider:

They have to engineer cars that will be sold nationwide and now worldwide, with as few locale specific deviations as possible to keep one-off costs down, that also will allow for an aesthetically pleasing configuration in both front plate and non-plate configurations, that will also pass any sort of build/longevity quality tests they have, hold up to any state and/or federal level regulations about such equipment, how that will/won't affect a crash rating (like, it becoming a projectile capable of removing a limb), that won't be so cheap that it will start to fail and face public backlash and recall, but not be so expensive that those that aren't front-plate states won't have to pay an included build price penalty and anything else I can't think of.

The aftermarket people that come up with these solutions aren't always held to the scale and rules that auto mfgs are.

I'd like for the front-plate to be non-drill as well... But, of all the things for GM to focus on when building out a car, I'm fine with them not spending that much time on the front plate mounts and more time on other things that are typically harder to perfect from aftermarket addons.

California requires a front plate but only enforces it when the cop feels the desire to pull you over. Doesn't enforce it at all on expensive / exotic cars.

Class politics. If you're going to tell nissans and toyota's to have a front plate or else then they should be pulling over the exotics and luxury cars that are never harassed for not having it or taking the law off the books because front plates are stupid and look stupid.
