Applying Vinyl Graphics (Large Areas)
I've messed up once already on my first Vinyl application, so I need advice please.
Needed to extend my Faux 45th red Stripe on my Hood so my Hex Vent will fit nicely in the Red area. Image for rough sizes only, not final position. Position of Hex Vent is correct/recommended FYI by Steve @ Hines. I need the Red Stripe to be about 4" Longer. I trimmed the Silver OK... Removed the Red... Got my Template made, Vinyl cut ... ... you don't want to see what happened next !! :-( #air-bubbles I have the right quality Vinyl: Oracal 751c ££! Should I be using heaps of soapy water and squeegee ? Last edited by redleader; 10-18-2013 at 07:31 AM. |

You can use water with a drop of hand soap to apply.
Take your time and work from the center out. |

When Image Works did my car, he used water sprayed on, but only on the very large bonnet (or is that hood) ones. For the boot (trunk) he just applied it dry & it's quite a bit wider than the red you are applying James.
He used a plastic spreader, the type of thing you use for applying body filler. I guess it's the old practice, practice, practice thing. He made it look dead easy, as we know it ain't |

I can't offer any sound advice here I'm afraid, most suggest soapy water, and perhaps a bit of heat (depending on vinyl type) as it helps to mould out the air blows. Trouble is if it's pre cut the shape will alter :-/ perhaps try heat once it's on with a few air blows?

Well, it seems to have worked ... just letting it set for a few hours now...
http://www.customvinyldecalsnsticker...hics_tips.html It just seems so Illogical to put anything (soapy water) between a sticky adhesive surface and its destination. Even though you squeegee it out a lot and apply a bit of heat & evaporation to help ... I just don't get it.... last thing you ever want is any dirt, dust, water on wet paint e.g.: ??!! Maybe this glue is special and catalytic ? |

I struggled with the concept too, but does the trick! Looks great on the pics! Do you need to cut the bonnet to place your vent thing? :-/

That looks like a very professional job to me James.
Not sure I'd have the balls or patience to do it or even more so to start chopping my "hood" up !! I'm sure the vents will mask the cut but what ya gonna do to stop the cut edge rusting (other than painting it).

Applying Vinyl Graphics (Large Areas)
Hi Rick, I've got an idea to either...
Paint the cut edges or to also... Get some kind of channelled bead gasket strip to cover the whole edge under, side and top and glue it on with high quality sealant (like my ground fx I did) or even Araldite it on :-O That should make a decent anti-rust seal combination for Rainy UK :-) Last edited by redleader; 10-19-2013 at 02:55 PM. |

Or split a rubber flex with a Stanley knife and use the outer layer as an edge strip secured with silicone sealant. Sorted and waterproof.

Not aware of that. You must know James - if it is Alu then you'll know when you lifted it off. Steel heavy, Alu light. Not Tom light though with his Carbon Fibre bonnet (hood).

I loose track of what's Steel, Aluminium or Plastic on the C5.
The Hood was really light. I can easily lift it by myself even at that size. The Front Wings (Fenders) are Steel I think? Magnet testing time... Last edited by redleader; 10-19-2013 at 02:55 PM. |
