ZL1 driveline kit vs. other options

I've been reading about this kit and aftermarket axles and driveshafts. My main question is while it seems cheaper to replace the driveshaft and axles with either of the two aftermarket options, we'd still be stuck with the stock 8.5" rear diff. This seems like a weak point that will eventually bite the dust, so we're not really solving the problem, correct? If or when that then goes, we'll have then spent more $ than if we just did this right the first time around.

Take a look at this article from a while back:
http://www.hotrod.com/articles/put-9...r-2016-camaro/

I've found this kit and did some research on it. It's GM and rated to handle 1400hp. Would it make more sense to go with a kit like this that addresses everything? I'm linking TGMPG since he's a sponsor but it can be found for less elsewhere.
http://www.thatgmpartsguy.com/oe-gm/22959394

I'm on the fence with doing this now or waiting for the current stock parts to go. I bought a driveshaft loop for some cheap insurance in the meantime since I'd need if I ever take the car to the strip anyway. What do you guys think?

I'm struggling with the same thing you are, run it until it goes.. or replace it up front. When I look at the upfront replacement there really isn't many good options for the rear diff. I also worry if I run until it breaks, what else will it break when coming apart and how hard will it be to get home haha

Well, as far as I know the only part that could damage our cars if it breaks back there is the drive shaft. BMR sells a drive shaft loop so you can grab that for starters.

I'd run it until it breaks normally but I really want to start hitting the drag strip this summer. It's a 2.5 hour drive which means that it's also a 3 hour tow truck ride back to my shop. I'd rather avoid that all together lol.

The ELSD of the 6th gen ZL1 is going to be a problem so we might need a 5th gen ZL1 rear diff with aftermarket axles and driveshaft like they did in that article. They make it looks so easy to do but I think everyone would be doing it by now if it really was.

I'll see if I can find that loop by BMR, that's a nice safety net.

When I read this quick it looked like they did, but he's using another aftermarket cast aluminum housing. I need to call them because I don't see any direct correlation on their website for ordering a kit like this. I'm pretty sure though that the test mule snapped the CF drive shaft, but it was still in a beta type phase.

Thanks man. I think we may at least need mounts fabricated though. They say they tested it in the video but when I looked through the new performance parts catalog and found it, they don't even mention the gen6 with it. Here's a link to the page in the 2017 catalog: http://viewer.epaperflip.com/Viewer....02c2c#?page=36

Has anyone here on the forum put one in yet?

I'm wondering this myself. I remember reading on either here or on one of the Facebook pages that some had snapped an axle and instead of having the dealership install stock gen6 new ones, he had them install the ZL1 axles because they weren't that much more money. For the pair of gen6 SS half axles it's $392.65 + shipping. The gen5 ZL1 axles are $830.45 + shipping. That's still a ton better than $1800 for an aftermarket set. Sorry, but $1800 for a set of half axles is plain stupid.

If the gen5 ZL1 axle's fit and hold up better, I'd do that in a pinch until I change out the rear end. I was told by a parts supplier that the splines were different and wouldn't fit the 6th gen SS diff some time ago, but that may have been in error.

Back to that axle kit.....I'd pony up the extra grand and get a 9" kit from GForce. I've already got their axles. They've survived plenty of M6 launches at well over 4K rpm N/A. They should be just fine now with the P1. For the money, I can't understand why you would want to go to the Gen 5 rear and loose the cooler? GForce's 9" kit retains the cooler and is a direct bolt in. And for very not that much more money.

The axles were worth every bit of the $$ I spent on them after I broke a stock one with 2900 miles on my car.

I think the previous poster that mentioned the gen5 was talking about just the axles. If I broke anything today, I'd go the cheapest route possible until that Gforce 9" rear comes out. The current Gforce axles and drive shaft that are out now won't fit their new 9" rear diff.

You could probably get by though without cooling if you only use your car at the strip. I definitely want cooling.

I had the concerns about buying parts twice should I hit the axles hard enough to break the Outlaws. GForce said they'd work with me on the 9" pricing due to being a returning customer. That right there sold me on buying the axles. They don't have to, but even the offer goes miles in my eyes.

That's great! I bet most folks might even be fine with just the axles and it should be lighter. Gforce seems like they've prioritized our cars for product development so I can't wait to see the final product for the 9" when it's ready.
