Belt slip is a reality contrary to claims see the proof

I spent the weekend at Palmer Motorsports park in Ware Massachusetts with my 2013 ZL-1 Auto and burned through 3 tanks of fuel with 11 Sessions over the 2 day event.

With the Trend to add a smaller upper pulley to your ZL-1 which I have always recommended against for obvious reasons, I though it fitting to share this picture after the event.

I hear it all the time I don't have any belt slip, I say see the proof.

I have an 18% lower with a stock upper and the shortest belt I can run.

My Throttle body was spottless before the event and now has a fair amount of belt dust.

The moral of the story, Don't fall in the the trap of smaller upper pulleys unless it's your only option.

Ted.

Green HD belt may be a better choice.

We run those as well but not available in every size.

I don't believe it will cure belt slip although a tougher belt for sure.

Is there a 10 rib option for this?

Is there any way blower rpm could be measured to determine how bad the slippage is?

Yes on my dyno.

The point is there is always belt slip, contrary to popular belief.

So Lets Not make it worse with smaller pulleys up top.

Do all your blower speeds with the lower pulley.

Ted.

Ted,

Will changing the idler pulley help with this or at least provide you the ability to change to one of the Green HD belts mentioned above?

I believe the rubber residue is coming from the edges of the belt, and it not necessarily indicative of "slip"

I wonder if a stock car, run through the same marathon testing would show similar residue......

top of the belt also has small grooves in it which could indicate debris between the belt and idler for an instant...

So I already have a 10" lower and only make 10 psi due to altitude.

Can I go to a 10 rib upper and lower?

The larger Idler gives about 1-2% more wrap but may allow a move to an HD belt, we often play with Idler pulleys to adjust belt length.

Unlikely as the blower speed is 18% lower.

Your currently at 28% or 21,700 blower rpm at 6500 crank rpm

Max recommended blower rpm is 23000.

The closest you can get in 8 rib is 9.17-2.55 combo for 38% or 23,400

LPE does offer a 9.73-2.70 10 rib that is good for 35% or 22,800 which would be your ulimtate solution.

My recommendation, try and do everything with a lower pulley unless you have no other choice.

Ted.
