Is the paint just complete crap?
Bought a brand new 2017 2SS convertible and so far no complaints with exception of the paint quality. Bought it with 6 miles on the ODO and right now have under 14K miles and already noticed a large amount of chips in the paint on the hood. For having a car two years and barely driving it these just seems unrealistic. I don't live on gravel roads or near them so it's not like a have rock constantly flying at my car. Anyone else running into this issue?

My front bumper has some good road rash as well as my side skirts. It’s a black car so I can see it all. I guess I could have spent the 4K on xpel wrapping the whole car but too late. Just gonna take it to a good paint shop to respray the front clip and side skirts. Then have it polished. If you drive your car like it was built to drive, it’s going to get some road scabs.

It has to do with the change over to the water based paints....they just dont hold up well...

It's pretty normal, all vehicles you find today are going to be like this. I have several notable chips all over my car with only 24,000 miles on it. I touch them up us Dr. Color Chip. It works well. I bring my car to car shows during the summer. I'm pretty particular about blemishes, chips, and swirl marks. So yes it sucks, but that's just the way it is unfortunately. Check this video out, it provides some good info on today's paint quality.

You can thank the EPA for mandating that water based paint, it's not Chevy, per se.

My Mazda6 only has 6500 miles on it, and has over a dozen rock chips in the hood already. I think my 04 Mustang had 1 or 2 in the 4 years I had it. I don't think my 07 had any |

The paint scratches just from looking at it. Swirls easily too. I dont think it is just waterborne paint though. My 2015 RAM truck has durable paint. 80k miles, driven all year and through auto washes. Not a swirl or scratch on it. Still looks as good as when new. Then again, requirements could have gotten worse for paint since 2015 though.

You're not gonna find a car that won't get chips in the paint. If it's happening on your Camaro, it's gonna happen on every other car with paint on the front. I've been driving for 27 years now and all of my cars have gotten them. Doesn't matter if it was painted in the 80s or last week. Part of it is that most other people drive slower than I do so I tend follow closer than I probably should. Another part of it is that the roads around here just have a lot of pebbles and gravel scattered everywhere.

you can avoid it if you never drive over 40 mph.i prefer to touch up the chips when they occur and drive at more reasonable speeds.

I’ve put Xpel on the front of my last three cars so I could daily drive them and not have chips. It works!

Finding New Roads

Honestly, It's an average paint job for assembly line + automation.
Cars aren't painted by humans in large scale anymore. Almost all new cars come with orange peel and imperfections. No car gets wet sanded or even cut n buffed. The real crap paint jobs are the ones like honda was putting out where a 6 year old car looked like sandstorm victim. Are camaro's good? Some, kinda maybe. Are they complete crap? No, all cars from all manufacturers have "monday made" editions. I have tons of rock chips but no scratches or dings, partly because I still park way out in parking lot BFE away from everybody and from that distance it looks great anyway lol. I know for many of us it's the most $$$ we've spent on something material and want it to be nice but at the end of the day... we bought a Camaro not a Koenigsegg |
