Rear Drag Wheel Setup for 1LE

Well, my car will be seeing dual duty next year. I will be running Time Attack as well as some TNT days in the Camaro, now to keep my 285s good for the track I want to get some 18" Wheels and 18" DR's for when im doing the 1/4... I cant seem to find any specs on what wheel dimensions are needed for the rears to run say a 305 Radial, can someone point me in the right direction? ive searched and cant find any threads on this topic.

Next Year I will be running a set of PRC Heads (maybe), TSP 2" Headers and LG Motorsports Cam (specs yet to be determined) and a tune + supporting mods for the cam.

I also have a race setup a with trash talking Honda driver (EG Hatch with an almost stock B16C5 that lost by 20+ lengths already) as well for $500 on the first TNT day. (ill be running some spray just incase but I dont think it will be needed as buddy has no clue how to drive)

Anyways thanks to anyone who points me to the right thread.... and maybe a cookie or 2

You will have more luck in the Wheel and Tire or the Drag race forums as the brakes on the 1LE are just standard SS Brembo painted red. You will have a wider audinace in those section and if you search you will find all of the specs you need.

From Nitto's site for their NT05R tire ( http://www.nittotire.com/Tire/nt05r#size )

Tire size . . . . . min - measuring - max
P285/40R18 . . . 9.5 - (10.0) - 11.0
P305/45R18 . . . 9.5 - (10.0) - 11.5
P315/40R18 . .. 10.5 - (11.0) - 12.5

Feel free to use those widths for anybody's tires of those sizes, as they should be the same (it's a tire industry standard thing).

I think that generally for drag racing you want to be on "measuring width" wheels.

Max width is more for cornering and may not give you as much sidewall flexibility (60' times), and min width (with reduced inflation pressure) can be a bit woozy at the big end.

Here are some of the more popular options....

You can get 18x9.5 (+40 offset) corvette wheels (replicas are cheaper), and run any 305/45R18 Drag Radial on them. With a little bit of modification and/or spacers, you can get the same wheel fit on the front too.

Other options include....18x8 & 18x9.5 TSW's, like Nurburgrings or Interlagos....run the same 305/45R18 Drag Radial. You can also order 18" Forgestar F14 or CF5 wheels up to 11" wide that will fit. M&H makes a 325/40R18 Drag Radial that would fit VERY NICE on an 11" wide Forgestar!!!

Just a few suggestions....

This thread read my mind. If you leave the DRs on the 1LE for any length of time wouldn't you want the overall height of the tire to be 27 (edit: <28) inches. Is that quick 1LE measurement correct?

Do Camaro compatible TPMS senders fit the Corvette wheel?

So that (+40 offset) is the key point to look for in Corvette 18" wheels to fit?

Are all the 18 inch Corvette wheel using the same bolt pattern spacing? I seem to remember reading they are not exactly the same as the 5th Gen Camaro.

Having my 1LE to the 1/4 track three times I have formed a few conclusions and you can say these things only apply to me and my 1LE if you wish.

#1 My 1LE is not any faster than my 2011 LS3 coupe was.

#2 In practice it might be slower at the drag strip. It is harder to launch. In my 2011 my best 60' was mid 1.9s on the Pirellis. My best 1LE so far is mid 2.1s. Once the Goodyears start spinning a tiny bit too much your run is over. I was running 2.1 or 2.5 60s last night and nothing in between.

#3 Added to the launching problem, my 1LEs struggle at the drag strip make sense since the 1LE advantages are offset by a little extra weight, the certain shift into 4th, and a big front sway bar (probably also adding to launch problems)

Last night my friend with a 2013 Mustang Auto GT and years of drag racing experience convinced me I am wasting my time with the stock Goodyears. By the way, his stock base GT with only a CAI, a tune, and DRs was running consistent 12.2s @ 114. My much badder looking 1LE 13.3s @ 109 or 13.8s depending on the launch. We both agreed my Camaro looked much faster than his Plain Jane Mustang.

I am planning to mod my car in stages with a dyno (maybe) and some track runs with each mod to get a good idea of the real performance gains. My friend said, what's the point if you cannot consistently launch the car, how can you evaluate each mod? His point was get the DRs first and that's your baseline. Sounds like a better plan to me, rather than just adding more power.

Fraxum,

The stock Goodyears are not steller, but they can be consistent.....2.0-2.2 60s over 7 runs. Seat time, seat time, seat time...

You got me. Point well taken. I am so impatient.

But it wouldn't hurt to try out DRs.

You and maybe you and your car are faster than me and my 1LE.

If you are only planning to change the rear wheels/tires, try to stick within 1/2" of whatever the front tire diameter is. I'm showing a 285/35R20 is 27.9" tall. I don't think it would hurt anything to go all the way up to 29" if desired. Supposedly, the technical limit for front and rear difference is 6%.

With the correct valve stem...yes the TPMS will fit.

Yes!

Are all the 18 inch Corvette wheel using the same bolt pattern spacing? I seem to remember reading they are not exactly the same as the 5th Gen Camaro.

All Corvette wheels use a 5x4.75 bolt pattern. That is equal to 120.65mm, which is a very minimal difference of 0.65mm from our 120mm bolt pattern. They will fit, and will center up just fine using the conical lugs. If concerned about it, use some hubcentric rings.

Wow! Thanks. I saw your post in the for sale section. Sorry for asking questions in two places. Now the search. I will take your advice elsewhere and go with OEM. Of course I will have to Plasti Dip them.

Any tire brand/size advice for a novice not wanting to break his axles?

Which wheels are you planning on buying, those "re-finished" silver Grand Sports? Just wondering why the need to Plasti-Dip??? As far as tires.....if you're wanting to get some "street" mileage out of them....get the Nitto NT555R. If this is going to be a race-only set-up, then "go for the gold".....M/T ET Street Radial II. With the M/T's, you may break an axle....or you may not....just depends on how hard you are on your launch!!! If it breaks....that just means it was a good time to upgrade to DSS axles!!!

I ran 315/40/17 on my 02 SLP. On 11" billet specialties drag rims. Was an awesome combo

Or maybe was 315-35. Can't remember honestly
