Ya it's pretty hit or miss... I just switch bulbs from both sides, & by some chance that seem to have fixed it for me...

It looks like its the bulbs... with 3 resistors it works... but i only have 5 in totsl and have no radio shack around, just ordered the bulbs OP used hopefully this will do it

So confirmed it was the bulbs... future people reading this tread just order the jdm allstar bulbs the OP indicates and you eill be good with the resistors.

Did the reverse / license plate and trunk

Ok so I went with the Aaron 60watt projector led for the reverse being I have had several quality control issues with JDM in the past. They fired up Extremely bright, but stayed on Dim after.

To fix this, I simply added another(total of 2) 1/4 watt resistor on one of the bulbs and now both sides turn off like they are suppose to. So if you experienced the same issue I did, again just double up on the 1/4 watt resistors or go up to a 1/2 watt resistor on one side...problem solved.

Just wanted to bump this up to say thank you for posting this mod with instructions.

Chrest was nice enough to send me some resistors and it all worked perfectly with the JDM LEDs from the first post.

Has anyone had problems with the backup camera staying on, after installing the led bulbs?

I installed the JDM ASTAR 1200 Lumen bulbs using 2.2k resistors and they glowed when off. Next I tried 2k and they also glowed, but dimmer. 1.4 k ohm finally worked. All the resistors I tried are 1/4 watt, and I did use solder. The lower the ohm value, the more wattage the resistor will draw, but the 1.4k ohm will only draw about .16 watts at 15 volts, so they should work fine.

I used the exact setup from the original post and had issues as well. I know for a fact that I had good connections with the resistors. I believe that I reversed the way the LED bulbs were inserted into the socket and it worked.

I have no idea why it would make a difference, I'm not an automotive electrical specialist by any means.

Basically, if you look at the LED and run the resistor identically on both bulbs, say top left lead wrapped around to bottom right lead, where the resistor wire run from left to right. When inserting into the socket, insert one side with the resistor top left, where you can see the resistor wire and the other side will still have the resistor top left but the resistor wire will be wrapped left. If that makes sense to anyone.

I make no guarantees but it seemed to work for me.

With led lights, it does make a difference which way the bulb is inserted. A diode (an led is a light- emitting diode) only allows current to flow in one direction, unlike a resistor which will allow current to pass either way. Because the on/off switch to the reverse lights is computer controlled , there is no open or closed physical contact switch to turn the current on and off. It's a solid state switch which allows a small amount of current to 'leak' when turned off. This leaking current is not enough to light up an old style incandescent bulb, but it is enough to make the led bulbs glow when off. The resistor we are adding gives the leaked current an alternate path to going through the led. The lower the ohm value, the more current will bypass the led, but more heat will be generated by the current passing through the resistor when the light is on. That's why the 6 ohm resistors get hot and need to handle higher wattage, and therefore they are larger and may require heat sinks.. The trick is to use the lowest ohm resistor that will keep a particular led from glowing when off. Higher ohms will make it glow, lower ohms will generate heat.

I have this issue. I added enough resistors to prevent the glow as recommended, but for some reason the reverse camera now stays on all the time. Switching back to the factory bulbs corrects the reverse camera issue. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

The backup camera staying on means there's not enough resistance going across the circuit. Add more resistance (or resistors) depending on how your setup is. I used a 50w 6ohm resistor; the same one used to get rid of hyper blinking for LED turn signals.
