The GT350R win over the standard ZL1 was in my opinion legitimate, the only area that the PP Mustang beat the 1LE Camaro was in the mile drag race. However the Mustang GT comes with aggressive gearing which is what allowed it to perform as well at higher speeds compared to the Camaro (they gave all of the credit to the engine). The Mustang GT lost in the figure 8 bad and yet they still wanted to give it the win at that point which really they only did to make it worth while to watch the entire video.
With that said on the mountain road they started to point out the issues with the Mustang, one being a long known complain but rarely spoken of one which is the seating position in the Mustang. Both admitted that being in the Mustang felt like you were sitting on a stack of phone books. The other is just that the car drives like a bit of a boat and is a large car, in my view the Mustang is aimed sqaure at baby boomers while the Camaro is aimed more at generation X and generation Y. Gear ratio comparison Camaro SS 1st: 2.664 2nd: 1.783 3rd: 1.302 4th: 1.000 5th: 0.741 6th: 0.503 final: 3.73 Mustang GT PP 1st: 3.66 2nd: 2.43 3rd: 1.69 4th: 1.31 5th: 1.00 6th: 0.65 final: 3.73 |

I always take lap times like that from MT with a grain of salt, especially at that track. The conditions can vastly change times.

While I agree. The Mustang and 1LE were ran same day so likely similar conditions. The GT4 and 458 are a different story and I'm leaning towards worse track conditions.

Being an "old" guy who had a '69 Z/28 (new), I miss the days of being able to order optional rear end gears and either a close ratio or wide ratio tranny. I guess time moves on.

i traded a 2016 PP GT stang for my 1LE (I had never owned GM) i had far too many issues with the GT though. steering rack replaced at 5000 miles, for example. Friday afternoon build “quality”. but it was Randy at Motor Trend on Demand that made me race down to the nearby dealer and get the SS 1LE. Recall when he pulled in after setting a hot lap and said the only major “con” was that he did not own one. That spoke volumes to me. That GT felt like a buick compared to the 1LE, but it did not have mag suspension. still horribly soft in comparison. the 2018 PP2 stang will be the one to give us a run—let’s see. In this current MTOD, Bovingdon (google him if you’re not sure who he is) says the 1LE is a real drivers car—you can sense it immediately. and with technology kept in the background, it’s proper. Randy says the perhaps the best car he’s wheeled at Willow. Go Chevy, and thanks Al and team! |

Insane the SS 1LE can beat a 458 Italia, and a GT4. American is the way to go in terms of performance. The 458 may be an older model, but none the less its still a 200k Sports car. Even a used one today will cost you 160k +.
Its hard to even but an exotic car when American provides you more bang for your buck. I'm looking getting a Lamborghini huracan and the price is hard to justify vs a Z06 or ZR1. Really? The GT3RS is lighter and has more power. I'm not trying to be funny but I couldn't imagine taking an SS 1LE to a track over a GT3RS. Plus the GT3RS is so fun going through the gears up to 8600 rpms. If you could explain a little further I would instead to know your thinking there. Do you feel the SS 1LE handles better than your GT3RS?

Something happening here, comparing a non 1LE Camaro SS to the Mustang GT 6 speed shows some numbers which doesn't make the Mustang look too good. Granted these were not same day/driver test but it shows that the standard SS Camaro might out accelerate the Mustang GT 6 speed PP.

Will be interesting to see so how those results shake out once the PP2 mustang gets out there. Granted, it doesn't have extra coolers, so it may overheat, but should improve the times significantly over PP1. That mustang they tested isn't far off and it is a run of the mill street car up against a track ready Camaro variant.

Torque or lack there of. The mustang lacks the torque of the can do and makes its power in the upper RPM range.
