Below is a pic of my favorite Camaro from back in the day. It was a 1970-1/2 coupe with the original 2 barrel 307 with a 3 spd manual transmission. The plastic cam gear stripped its teeth one block away from home and ruined the engine. No big deal, I was planning to rebuild the car anyway. I built a 350 from a 010 block, cast crank, pink rods, forged pistons, 305/285 dual pattern cam, 202 heads. Carburetor was an Holley 600CFM and headers came from Hooker. I ordered a 17 lb flywheel to which I bolted a Zoom clutch. I found a Hurst shifted wide ratio Muncie 4 speed for $200 at a local wrecking yard and my machine shop teacher gave me a posi equipped, disk brake rear end with 2.73 gears from a 1979 Trans AM. I replaced the rusted quarter panels and painted the car in my garage. The rubber bushings in the suspension were disintegrating so I replaced them with poly-urethane. To speed up the steering, I added a 12:1 steering box from a 1980 Z28.
My 70 coupe was a blast to drive. I used to raise hell all over town in that car! The engine was way more responsive than the LT1 in my 2SS. The engine had an awesome sounding lumpy idle and the glass packs really screamed as I speed shifted the Muncie barking the tires in all 4 gears. Trap speed averaged around 105 so the engine was making approx 375hp at the crank. I spent less than $5000 on that Camaro including the purchase price of the car. I drove the wheels off that car for 12 years and finally sold it for $10,000 in 2001. Sure wish I kept it but I'll build something similar in a few years when I pay off my 2SS. No pics but after my wife and I were first married we bought a new '81 model Camaro in late '80. Kids and military life ended that and now here we are 37 years later and in our '16 SS. Happy!

This doesn't belong to me but it is being built in my shop. My buddy owns it and I consider him the co owner of the shop. It is going to be street/strip. But mostly strip. Looking for 9s out of it. I have built enough second gens to go nines and that is before they had the cool modern electronics. lol

Will do. Mostly just a ton of parts piling up. We call this car little sister since she got almost all my nova's old powertrain parts. Eventually she will get the 454 we have in another vehicle. Originally we built a 383 for it. But I gave him a 355 decently built, we changed the cam for a DD truck in the 383 and that will replace the 454 in the truck. Then we build the 454 until we blow up the 355. I am trying to convince my buddy to go turbo big block but he is going n2o as of now. Cheaper that way and a lot easier.

I remember as a little kid, the street machine look was in. More my time was when Pro-Touring got started. That's where my heart is at. Enormous 28×15 Mikey Thompsons on a street car just doesn't feel right to me, but to each their own. I always cringe when I hear the old guys recalling stories of how they cut the quarter panels and installed air shocks to fit tires. The huge raked look just says to me that this car is destined for only one thing, a straight line. I live where the glaciers carved so many hills and such that the roads can be very curvy and hilly in many places, so much more fun than a quick blast down the straight highway/back "farm road".

LOVE the "70" Cool story... "lumpy idle" I would refer to my shifts as "chirps" but, "barking the tires" sounds way better. Who's the lucky bastard that scored your ride for $10,000? |
