5.0 VS US

Maybe I should re-phrase this. What do you guys see as the advantages to the 2011-2014 5.0's? I know they have us a bit on weight but for the disparity in cubic inches, it seems they mph and ET very well. We may make more peak power and torque but the 5.0 seems to do very well with its power band. Anyone care to offer up more knowledge on this?

The 5.0 has a broader powerband, so after a shift it is in or near the powerband. This is for 6 speeds, on the 8 speeds the shift RPM drop is less, that is why the A8 is faster than the M6 on the 6th gen Camaro.

Live axle is also a huge advantage.

I have a 2014 Mustang 5.0 along side my Camaro V6, both cars are fun to drive.

Personally I think the 5.0 is fast but not faster than our SS. When I was just bolt ons, I was walking away from stock 5.0s and still beating bolt on 5.0's pretty good

My understanding was that all things being equal (ie..stock vs stock) between say a 14 SS and 14 5.0 would see the 5.0 .3-.5 tics faster in the 1/4.

Would you agree that once N/A mods begin, in theory anyway, the ls3 should have a bit of an advantage? I say that because between cam swaps, cylinder heads and cubic inches we have more potential to make more horsepower. It seems the 5.0 comes a bit more efficient from the factory (4v n such), making excellent use of its CI. And would you guys also agree that when it comes to forced induction, the 4v is going to have an advantage on the ls3? (these are principles in general)

That has been my experience. 5.0 is faster stock.

And just to be clear, I am simply looking for clarity in the strengths and weakness's of each car. Not trying to establish any sort of fanboy superiority. I would gladly own a 5.0 just as I do my SS.

I think they are pretty even m6 to m6 on rolls. From a dig they come out pretty hard. I can't vouch for autos but I've been able to edge out a few up top. I'm sure they were stock or exhaust only. I honestly can't say if that was just out driving the other guy. Been absolutely waxed by a forced induction one. They aren't slow. I've found the 11-14 to be more formidable than the S550. The best driver should win.

I knew the Mustang was faster stock but still bought the Camaro.

I agree they are no slouch. Was that 5.0 you're edging out in your sig stock? I know you're lightly modded correct.

And this gets to one of my questions. Why do they pull hard up top? Power wise, again, all things being equal, (ie...m6-m6) the ls3 is making more power than the 5.0 or at least equal. Why does their power seem to be stronger? Does this have to do with the fact that their average peak power is carried through a broader RPM on the top end?

I hope this made sense

Un-biased opinion here.

5.0's have less low-end grunt compared to the LS3, but, quickly gain speed in the mid-range.

They can rev a lot higher than a stock LS3 and most shift at 7K if bone stock. Once modded, they can rev to 8K and still make power all the way to that RPM. Not to mention, the MT-82 in 5th gear is a 1:1 and the stock gears in a track pack model for example, are 3.73 which also help quite a bit.

There is only about a 100-150LB difference between an SS and the 5.0 and they make nearly identical power.

A great comparison is a full bolt-on 5.0 vs a cammed SS. Both are very much capable of bottom 11's with the right driver, despite the Camaro making upwards of nearly 500 RWHP with a cam, good tune and fuel.

Again, once you mod, it is anyone's race. Stock for stock, the edge goes to the 5.0 either from a dig or a roll.

The 6th gens, however, are a different story. More power, bit less weight than the previous 5th gen and are very well built cars. The 2018 5.0 may stand a better chance, but, the 6th Gen SS is most likely a tick faster with equal drivers.
