6th speed use?

I just rarely use my 6 th gear.

I like the power i have when im in fifth and feel the 6th is REALLY just good if your gonna stay in the right lane for a LONG time and pretty much just be coasting.

At 120 km (20 over limit) im turning 1800 and thats with the 3.91's so its low in the powerband and there, i have almost no power if i need it fast (gotta dwn shift). So, unless i drive way above the limit, i often find myself driving in 5th.

I was thinking that because of this, i prolly could get away with using more gear in the rear because and get a better off the line hit.

Are there any guys running more gear on here with our cars? (Im thinking of this as i was writing the speed /rpm question).

I almost always run in 6th on the highway. I am with you, if I need to go fast, I will downshift. 5th and 6th are dogs anyways. My car really likes anything 2500rpms and above.

I just did a long drive from San Diego to Las Vegas. I put it in 6th only when I was around 100. There's some fun stretches of road on the 15 freeway where it is straight for miles and you can really open it up. Had some family in a minivan that's probably still talking about me. They were about a half mile ahead of me doing about 70 in the fast lane and no one in front of them for at least a mile and a half. I was in 6th doing about 95 then downshifted to 5th and took it up to 127 by the time I blew past them. I'm sure that van shook when I went by, my wife was just shaking her head like why?

My wife does the same thing, but its usually because I downshift and go around some idiot driver here in Oklahoma.

For just cruising I go to 6th gear at 55 mph and above. If i'm in traffic where I'm constantly forced to hunt between 45-60 I'll leave it in 5th. I leave it in 6th even when passing someone unless there is a tight window time-wise or I "know" someone is going to speed up to try to block me, which requires 5th or 4th gear.

You need more low end torque.

55 and above and I'm in 6th. Use it constantly. Why waste gas?

The 1LE TR6060 MM6 and the SS TR6060 M10 are overdrive in 5th and 6th gears.
Final ratios (2nd column specs in both charts below) match fairly close between the 1LE 3.91 and SS with 3.45

MM6 ... w/3.91
1st gear ratio: 2.66 10.42
2nd gear ratio: 1.78 6.97
3rd gear ratio: 1.30 5.09
4th gear ratio: 1.00 3.91
5th gear ratio: 0.74 2.90
6th gear ratio: 0.50 1.96

M10 ... w/3.45 ... w/3.91
1st gear ratio: 3.01 10.38 11.77
2nd gear ratio: 2.07 7.14 8.09
3rd gear ratio: 1.43 4.93 5.59
4th gear ratio: 1.00 3.45 3.91
5th gear ratio: 0.84 2.90 3.28
6th gear ratio: 0.57 1.97 2.23

Charts copied from 1LE thread.

I only use 5th and 6th on the interstate. Around town I rarely get out of 4th.

Considering 5th is overdrive and 6th is double overdrive, it makes no sense to be cruising around sub 60 using either of them.

Expressway cruise gear only and typically if only cruising over 75 mph.

I didn't buy the car for the gas mileage. I only drive it 1-2 days a week. I'm pretty mellow around town but get me on an open highway with very little traffic and it's always around 90-100. That one instance was out in the middle of nowhere going through the desert. Even cops don't like to go out there too much.

2.75" x pipe reduced to 2.5" Rear. Or 3" reduced to 2.5" like American Racing cat back should do the trick. This helps to maintain back pressure. I have Dynamax 3" X pipe that reduces to 2.5" Magnaflow at the tunnel brace. 473whp and no need to downshift from 5th to pass. Lighter wheels also helps.

When I went to Columbus, I accidentally used 5th gear instead of 6th, and kept an average speed of 77 mph & I got 25.2 MPG. On the way home, I remembered to use 6th and got 29.2 MPG ...

...not that I bought the car for the gas mileage (entirely)
