It was the same type body cladding that the Element had. But GM was panned for it. I think Honda eventually got rid of it as well. If you look at the Rendezvous you can see a lot of cladding as well, but it was always painted. If you look, I think you will see the two shared the same front door and if you look under the cladding you will see the door was designed with the cladding as part of the outer panel. So simply removing the cladding was an issue. So the Aztek cladding was simply painted.

I recall something about the Aztec trying to look like a tennis shoe.

BTW, this was the show car.

Do you think it looks better? Would it have done well compared to what was released?

I was also disappointed with the production version over the concept. I was hoping they would build the Pontiac Stinger concept.

The Aztec, was, well, ugly. However, the vehicle was not a total fail. Sure, in and of itself it was. However, the Aztec blazed the trail for the "crossover" vehicle.

It was only an failure in the styling aspect. It was a very good driving and functional vehicle. I would have bought one if I could have gotten over its looks. Again I think there are plenty of vehicles today that look as bad or worse than the Aztek did. And the younger generation are snapping them up. Nobody can say the Juke is better looking, at least nobody in their right mind.
