Common problems?

So I'm in the market, most likely a ZL1 convertible, but I'm also considering a coupe or even a Hellcat.

I did a quick search but didn't really see anything, does the ZL1 have any common issues? Stock or modded?

Hellcats of course have the crank pulley issue when modded, along with blower bearings (not sure if that's a problem still on the newest models) and I guess some people have had rear end problems.

ZL1 have anything like that? Lack of issues would be a BIG deciding factor in the cars.

Zero Problems. Why is a Ford person wanting to buy a GM product? Problems?

No issues with Ford other than I'm not a fan of the Mustang style. I honestly have no brand loyalty. I buy based on reliability and quality. I've owned Ford, Dodge, Chevy, Toyota, Chrysler.

In fact our current Expedition with almost 180k miles has had 0 issues for us. Big reason for Ford is my father-in-law is a Ford mechanic, so any repairs he takes care of at work, on the lift, with all the right tools.

I've got no problem doing my own work, but if someone is willing to do the work for free with all the right equipment and tools I won't argue!

Camaro or Hellcat would be me doing all the work haha.

+1 exactly this. Go test drive the hell cat and the ZL1 A10 back to back. I will guarantee you laugh your ass off when you go full throttle 1st to 4th gear. I have not had any issues other than a shit alignment from the factory and loose sway bar endlinks.

Obviously you will get a bias opinion here leaning towards the ZL1. I too love all cars and appreciate everything about them. To make this short. The ZL1 is the best all around. Its not the fastest as you have the Demon and it doesnt sound the best (I think the GT350 sounds amazing "JMO") but it is a close 2nd in the 1/4 mile and will run circles around all of them on a Road Course.

Now I will encourage anyone to buy anything other than a ZL1 but that is because I want to be the only one that has it as its amazing and I dont like to share.

I would try both if possible.

The Hellcat A8 is supposed to be exquisite also.

I driven the A8 in both the SRT & Hell-Cat. Feels very similar to GM A8 & unfortunately it is not very impressive. It is good just not great

The transmission ratios are very aggressive in the A10 and does not compare to the A8.

Just checked the gears for both transmissions.

1st - 3rd basically no differences.

The A10 has a smoother curves after that.

At WOT you are already behond legal speed at the end of 3rd.

I would still try both since the OP stated that he buy quality and reliability.

Both are reliable.

I've wondered lately if the lower RPM of the LT4 vs the 6.2 torque has something to do with how it drives compared to the Hellcat.

I have not driven a hellcat due to I love curves and to track.

I hear the hellcat is comfy and the power is fun.

I currently have an A10 that is amazing. This is the first sports/muscle car I have ever owned with an automatic transmission and it is super addictive and fun to drive.

The ZL1 can be as tame as you want it to be and as wild as you feel comfortable allowing it to be. The motor and drive train are well sorted and feel great. I love the Recaro seats. They hold you in place and are heated and ventilated.

Other than the loose end link issue people have had, I don't know of any common issues. I have not had that issue with mine though.

Good luck on your search.

I have drove my friends 2017 hellcat and it is a blast! he has had zero issues with it. its more roomie on the interior, and honestly it is easier and has better fuctions on the screen when changing modes. it also has a custom mode that you can single click for your desired settings - much better than the Zl1. The Zl1 is more of a "cockpit" feel and has a "purpose race" feel (hellcat owners words). the hellcat has a more "throw back muscle car" feel while the ZL1 is modern in every aspect. Both are honestly great cars. Dollar for dollar, the hellcat is cheaper to mod and make 1k hp, but obviously the Zl1 handles much better.

The Hellcat would be a more practical car if you need trunk space and has better outward visibility, but the 19 ZL1 will have the rear camera mirror showing a wide view of the rear while driving. That should fix the biggest criticism I had of the 2012 ZL1 I owned. The ZL1 has notable throttle lag in first gear in the manual trans models, but most who have the auto trans love it. I follow this forum and there aren't a lot of complaints about the car.
