1SS MPG tips
Hey guys, my 1SS has been averaging only 13.5 MPG. It's an M6 and while I know it's pretty much nothing but city driving, I'm sure I can get it up to at least 15 or 16 MPG. Any tips? Keep in mind, I'm new to stick and am just starting to get the hang of it. How do I drive stick the most efficiently?
P.S. I'll have pics up soon! The weather here in FL has been terrible and I haven't even washed the poor girl since I got her last Thursday! I feel bad. :P |

keep the RPM's as low as you can. I have primarily city/town driving also and I just keep the RPM's as low as possible and I'm averaging 16.5-ish.

The only tip would be, the lower you keep the RPM the better your mileage will be. Myself most of my driving is around town with 45Mph limits. I drive it basically like a 4 speed and get around 14.5 out of it. I didn't buy the car for the Mpg, when it needs gas it just gives me another excuse to drive it ...

Yea, short shift her. By that I mean keep the RPMs below 2k. Oh, and keep your foot out of her, if you can........muwaaaahaaaaaaa.

The drag strip is like sniffing glue, it's cheap, it's a decent buzz, it doesn't last long and they are all the same. Road racing is like China White Heroin, the buzz is stronger, the high lasts for hours, it's extremely addictive and they are all different. I can't wait for my next Track fix. I get around 16-18 with a supercharger...so you know I dont take it easy on the gas
But then again I do 60% highway and 40% city..so I guess it might be the highway factor

Raise your tire pressure to 38 front 37 rear. Picked up 1.5 miles per gallon.

Same MPG issues as you,one sure fire way is cruise control, that negates a leaden foot somewhat. No good in town though,of course.Mind you, i dont have an exhaust div' to worry about MPG.

When you are at speed keep it in the highest gear that won't lug the engine. This is not a v6 or i4 so you can get the RPMs really loa and still keep the engine happy.
When accelerating you will actually waste gas if you are in to high a gear, better to downshift get to the speed you want to go and then shift back to the high gear. I know how traffic is in southern dade so I hear you. my gears when maintaining speed are as follows, none of these speeds lug the engine when maintaining speed on flat ground: 1st 0-10 2nd 10-16 3rd 16-23 4th 23-34 5th 34-48 6th >48 or sometimes 1st 0-16 2nd skip 3rd 16-35 4th skip 5th 35-50 6th >50 These gears are generally to high for any real acceleration although you could creep up on the speed. basically I drive like this 60% of the time and then burn up all the gas I saved the rest of the time by shifting between 4500 and 6000

Two big things you can do
1. Shift early. Keep the RPM's as low as possible. Under light loads, the V8 has enough torque to run around town as low as 1000 RPM. 2. Go easy on the brakes. If you see a red light or stop sign coming, let off the gas before you are right on top of it, and let it coast down a little bit. (Anytime you step on the brake pedal, you are dissipating energy as waste heat).

Pretty much this. I've been able to get around 20 on average.
1st 0-12 2nd 12-17 3rd 18-25 4th 26-30 5th 31-45 6th 45+ I don't know if this keeps it exactly at 1000 RPM, but this will prevent the car from going below that which (personally) feels like when it starts to lug. |
