GMI Z28Forever talks with Al Oppenhieser about 1LE

On GM Inside News, member Z28Forever spoke one on one with Al Oppenheiser about the 1LE.

http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f...hieser-240873/

I had a chance to speak to Al O. this morning about things Camaro and specifically the 1LE.

Here are the highlights:

1) MRC. MRC allows this 1LE to go around a track faster than without it. It wasn't added to make the car more civilized on the street, but to make it faster around a road course. Chevy realizes that some sanctioning bodies don't allow it - and they have something they're working on for that. But the weekend autocrossers should dominate with this set up.

2) Cost. Chevy is shooting for a V6 1LE for under $30K and a V8 1LE for under $40K. It will cost more than the 5th gen car, which Al admits was an underpriced bargain, but not by that much. If you could afford a 5th gen 1LE, you'll be able to afford the 6th gen.

3) V6 1LE. I confirmed that it's faster than the previous Camaro SS around a track, not the previous 1LE.

4) The 2.0T is now in production. The 2.0T is an in demand motor and Camaro had to wait it's turn for it in the production pipeline.

5) Will there be a 2.0T 1LE? No plans yet, but very possible. Al wanted me to ask you guys about it and I will later in another thread. If there is a demand for one, GM will most probably make one. I'll probably post a poll on it later and send it off to them.

6) Yes we talked about a 6th gen Z/28, to which Al responded, "What Z/28?" On that topic of a mythical Z/28, he asked me, if I'd rather live with a "skip shift" or a $700 tax. I told him, give me the skip shift and put the 700 bucks back into the car's performance.

I have to admit I'm more excited to see the test reviews on the V6 than the V8. For $30K this car will be a steal and great performer.

It has already been pointed out over at GMInsideNews that Al's comment on price does not make sense on the V8. He is saying the 1LE option will cost a "little" more than it did on the 5th Gen car ($3,500), but then says their goal it to price the car to start under $40,000. That math does not add up. The base 1SS plus $3,500 is already getting just over $40,000. HOWEVER, his comments about price do show that the 6th Gen 1LE will be pretty close (very low $40's), and all evidence shows that this car will likely run very close to the GT350 with the track pack option on the road courses for a FRACTION of the cost. Even if you go MSRP to MSRP, the Camaro is a massive bang for the buck winner over the GT350, but remember the GT350 is SO limited in availability that dealers are banging customers for big markups that Camaro 1LE buyers will not face.

I'm VERY glad to see him address the MRC question. This is what happens when the person asking the questions (Z28Forever) is a car guy and Camaro nut.

If the 1ss 1le is under 40 I'll order it day one. I just don't see how they could possibly pull it off.

I'm in if its under 45. Hopefully closer to 41-42.

Goal is under 40, doesnt mean itll happen. but what does that mean for the 2SS??? if theres a 4K difference for disco lights and an upgraded sound system, Im going to be unhappy :( (thats a 4K difference from 2SS+NPP+NRC)

Right now a 1SS with MRC + NPP sits at $39,885, they want to include recaros and an eLSD (and a HUD) for under $115....

Im guessing $42000 for the car, thats $1000 for Brakes, $900 for brakes, $100 for HUD

Still though....I hope the 2SS gets some new features to justify the difference (or a price drop)
