ZL1 Oil Pump How to Replace
I have a 2018 ZL1 and I am not sure of the build date. I am looking to replace the oil pump just in case. I have a garage with a lift. I just wanted to pick someones brain on how to replace the oil pump. Do you have to pull the motor? Is it easier through the bottom? Any info would be great.

You'll need to pull the entire front end off since it's located on the front of the engine. That's why a vast majority of people who replace it only do so if they are doing a cam drive it's labor intensive or if it actually fails.
You don't have to do the engine but you can if you want and have the ability to do so. You might be able to get to it from the underside but I don't know if that really is an option. The build date can be found on the sticker in the driver's door. It'll be close to the top left corner of the sticker. |

Does anyone know the part number of a bolt that is supposedly one time use when changing the oil pump? Thanks.

the crank pulley bolt is one time use.
551218 They are really cheap for how big the bolt is. you will want to get a flywheel locking tool.

I'm pretty sure that the balancer bolt can be reused, however, the installation procedure is different for new vs used bolts. Personally, I would go with an ARP bolt. The high torque requirement and shallow head on the OEM bolt makes me nervous. It would be a read PITA if the head rounded off when attempting to remove the bolt. The ARP has a really deep (~1"), 12 pt head. No way you're rounding that sucker off.

Sounds like you should drop it off at a shop.

I hope this wasnt for me since I was a GM tech for 10 years back in the late 80s early 90s. Everyone has to do a job for the first time. Working in a dealership you get a lot of tips and tricks to do it quickly as they pay flat rate. I just wanted to see if someone had seen a video or had some insight. The last time I changed an oil pump it was in the bottom of the engine inside the oil pan...

So has anyone replaced their own? A good shop in Maine is hard to find.

Yes please that would be great. Mine has a build date of 1/2018 and it seems to hold decent oil pressure at 31 PSI at idle/ I am looking for the actual specs right now. I thought it was under 20 at idle or something at 1000 rpms?

2018 ZL1
Build date june 2017. My oil pressure is perfect 30psi hot at idle, with 13,000 miles,so its a pre-emtive change rather than a failed part.might start next week,as already have the new pump. |

I replaced mine during my phase.2 upgrade of cam, heads, ported blower, etc...
https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showt...hlight=PHASE.2 There are a lot of great you-tube videos that will help. I'd search for cam swap videos first and that will get you close. Do you have any other plans to upgrade the car? At the level you are at to upgrade the oil pump, the following upgrades seem like a no brainer to me... Assuming you had plans to modify. I listed them from the cheapest / easiest - to the least necessary, but easy while everything is apart. 1. Upgrade to the Katech oil pump 2. Upgrade to the Katech C5R Chain 3. Upgrade to a LME chain guide 4. Upgrade to an ATI Damper + OD Pulley 5. Change front main seal 6. Replace all belts 7. Install lower t-stat 8. Upgrade front HX 9. Cam Swap 10. Port and clean up your heads / vale train 11. Ported blower 12. VVT Delete front cover 13. DoD Delete valley cover 14. Sorry for the long list, i think you get the idea

Thanks SoCal I will have to look up some of these updates. The Cam seems like a no brainer and I intended on doing the Kong Stage X 103 MM TB and a 2.3 upper pulley on mine. I am scared of the oil pump and I bought the car used so I have no idea if its been done. Mine is a M6 so I dont know if I have the same challenge with the DOD Valley cover. Is that for the Auto only like on the SS where it drops cylinders? Why wouldnt you want the VVT? I thought that was good for power?
