Hi everyone first post here just bought a used 16 1ss m6 on Saturday. Car came with MRR 228 wheels in 9/10" and stock tires that are pretty much toast.

I am coming from a Fiesta ST with really sharp turn in and was slightly disappointed in the canyons with the turn in and grip available but think this was mostly due to the 2 year old run down stock tires.

Fitment wise it looks like 255/40/20 and 285/35/20 would fit best however to be honest i don't really have the budget to drop ~1500 for PS4s or PSS right now starting my job as a consultant out of school. I really want something like the Firehawk Indy that i have heard good things about because i canyon carve a lot but also plan on tracking every few months here and there.

What I'm seeing available is 245/40 (stock) and 275/35/20 for the front.

285/35 is available for the back. My question is which will be better from a handling/ turn-in perspective? 275 min rim width is 9 in which i have but not sure if that is too close. ON the flip side 245 seems really narrow for this car and offers limited grip for what i want out of the car. Any advice would be greatly appreciated or suggestion on other cheap sizes i could run that offers great handling characteristics. I also have to get an alignment which costs about $120 so factoring that into total cost.

I am running 285/35-20's on all four corners on 20X10's et23, the backs fit nice but the fronts like to rub on the wheel liner if you make a lot of hard turns either way, I had to use a 3mm spacer to clear the strut, now I plan to go with a 275/35 and they will clear everything, as far as handling, the square setup handles great and I paid 590 out the door for the BFG's Comp-2 AS through discount tire direct, they do price match so you have to shop around.

If you plan to keep the car for a long time I would invest in 18" wheels and tires. There are more inexpensive options for track tires as well and you can get more front width pretty easily and probably come out right where a set of MPSS would cost for 20s.

Thank you for responses. I'm definitely going to stick with running the MRR 20s and def not running all seasons because I live in permanent summer and handling is my #1. My question really is would the bulge from a 275/35 kill the handling more than running a 245 on the front would kill the grip?

If both are shit options I'll get some PS4s and plunk down the cash but wondering if anyone has run 275/35 on the front for autocross or track and has any feedback?

for about 2/3 the price figured i might as well see if anyone has tried it

I spent a few min looking into this today actually, there were a few people over on the audi and lexus forums who have mounted 275/30 tires on a 9" rim. I believe I will be doing the same if I go with a 9" front tire.

I have 275's mounted onto my stock 8.5 fronts with no issues for my autocross setup.

running a 275 on a 9" wheel is pretty pinched and would create quite a bit of side wall flex when you corner.
are the stock tires the all seasons or the summer tires? no one as been impressed with the all seasons. I think the firestones would be a good step up in grip and turn in if you stay around the 245 front an 275 rear sizes. going too much bigger like 275 front and 305 rear would have a pretty negative impact on steering feel IMO.

I'm looking now at PSS since i can get them for about 1020 shipped and the fire hawk indy 500s are about 800 shipped so its honestly not too much of a gap. I'm looking at doing 255 40 and 285 35.

I know a lot of people on Camaro5 did 275 on 9 inch fronts but a lot of people don't seem very concerned with turn in and front sidewall flex nor track performance so i take it with a grain of salt. I want it to feel immediate but the fact that you have 275 on stock 8.5 is interesting.

Calculators tell me min rim width is 9 inch so not sure. Has anyone run 295 30 or 295 35 on a 10 inch back?

I’m running all stock sizes but I have the Firehawks. Honestly they’re way better then stock in my opinion. I mean price wise yes. I paid 650 for mine through discount tire. They would’ve been cheaper but I got suckered into the warranty on them. I mean they’re not proxy’s or PS4’s. But they’re definitely a good bang for your buck. I’ve done a few canyon runs and grip wise they’re pretty good. I price matched them at Discount. I can’t remember what site I found them on, I think tirerack but if you search around you can find them pretty cheap. Threw some pics here so you could see what they look like stock

The hankook RS4's I'm running right now have a tread width of 10.1.... on 8.5" wide wheel its very pinched but the extremely stiff side walls make up for that somewhat. The only reason I'm running the weird combo is due to autocross rules.

looking at the tread widths on tire rack for the 255/40 and 295/30. looks like they would match up perfectly for you. I was always told to make the measured tread width the same as the wheel width.
I think 255 converts to about 10.06 inches. but tire racks actual measured width is 8.9

Last summer I was running 275/35 on 9.5" wheels and that was fairly sharp turn in....

That's just all my opinion, and I don't really have factual evidence saying whats good or bad. Hopefully someone can chime in with first hand experience with the tires youre talking about.

275/30/20 on a 10" inch wheel here wouldnt put them on a 9" wide wheel

ADvansuper said that's what he was running for AUtoX. That's interesting. 295 shows diff in overall diameter. I know Pilot Super Sport also tend to run wide so I'm not sure if a 285 would end up being closer to 295 anyways. I want a 295 but min rim width is showing as 10 in so cutting it close. yeah with 9.5" i probably wouldn't second guess it.

Thanks for the pics and info man. How has wear been for you and would you say grip was equivalent to a max summer? I don't want to do stock sizes on 9/10in but I can't seem to find them cheaper than 815 shipped which is kind of not worth it.

I ran RE71R's for autocross. Turn in was great, didn't have enough camber to save the shoulders and had to flip them plus turn the insides out a couple of times. I kept them at 30-33 PSI when running autocross and more camber will help them out. The RE71R has a very stiff sidewall, so there's not much concern there about flex and when you max the camber it'll benefit a lot from it.

The reason I did 275 all around was so I didn't have to buy another set of from tires when they eventually wore faster than the rears and I could just flip them by unmounting and mounting again.

PSS's have a softer sidewall, so you will see some roll over when cornering unless you bump up the pressures.
