iPhone 5 under Apple care = 5S
Serious question. My iPhone 5 is falling apart. I have had a case on it at all times no scratches etc. my sleep button stopped working recently and I was dealing with it. But now I have a scratch on the INSIDE of my camera lens. I have no idea how. I have Apple care and I'm near an apple store. It's a 64 GB model.
My question is, since the iPhone 5 is discontinued, would they have to scrape up an old iPhone 5 and sell it to me or would they replace it with a 64 GB 5S? Any clue? On an un related note. I have a software issue. I can't sign into any iTunes AppStore or iCloud account on my iPhone. It won't stay signed in. I've tried turning it off repeatedly and no luck. Anyone else experiencing this?? Thanks for your time Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

More than likely they will replace it with a refurbished iPhone 5.
As for the software issues I can't say much about that since I am not experiencing it. Are you on IOS 7? Could just be a glitch in the new OS |

Thanks for the quick replies, faster than the apple forums. Another iPhone 5 is better than a broken one I suppose but I have a feeling this is why they are discontinuing them.
This was happening just before ios7. I assumed it would act better after the update Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

It's a known defect and they will replace it with a new phone. Both of friends just had it done. Make an apt with the apple store and they will test the button. When it doesn't work they will give you a new one. They have just the phones boxed up just for this occasion

Maybe if you hold out for a while and one thre supply goes down on the 5's you could get a 5S. You can also ask how much it would be to trade up .

Although what everyone is saying is usually right, about 6 months ago I took my son's phone in for a cracked screen. They did not have the regular 4 in stock at the store. I asked if they could upgrade to a 4S, and at first they said no. But I pushed a little and the store manager allowed the upgrade as a convenience. They can do it, but you have to be nice and push a little. I had tried it before and it did not work, this was the first time.

As others have said, you can still pickup a new iphone 5. In fact, I did this on the release date of the 5s. I did not see the extra $100 in features for the 5s and did not like the look of the 5c that comes at the same price point. |

Apple can manage to produce one high quality aluminum casing phone, but producing two would have been more difficult. Further, the 5c is said to replace the 5. The aluminum casing is more expensive than a similarly produced injection molded plastic case used for the 5c. The 5s comes at a greater price point than the 5 or the 5c. Apple can justify equipping a premium price point 5s with an aluminum case. Thus, both cost and ease of manufacturing are the reasons that the 5 was discontinued. Apple would have been required to produce two aluminum casing phones: the 5 and the 5s. This would have exacerbated the company's production capacity. |

They are discontinuing them because it cost to much to sell at a discounted price of $99 for a 16gb and they can't keep them at the same price as the 5s.
