That’s nothing, I called a dealership in Boston (don’t recall the name) about a ZLE “in transit”. They wanted $20,000 ADM!

Is there a difference between dealer "markups" via accessories and a straight up +5k ADM?

I thought the way it worked for the accessories was that if the original order included something like an insane amount of vinyl add-ons and badging, Chevrolet ships the car with those parts and charges the dealership for them. So in other words, the dealership is already invoiced for those parts through the car and would be taking a loss by "removing" them.

I understand it would be a different story if the window sticker didn't have those options (not a part of the factory order), and dealers insisted on 5k in badges and vinyl

Well, with accessories at least you're getting...something? How valuable those things are is debatable. But financially to you, no, there is no difference.

It also depends on the accessories and dealer add-ons. The add-ons that are extraneously forced onto you OUTSIDE of Chevy, is stuff like Nitrogen-filled tires, paint sealant, interior scotch guard, undercoating, vehicle trackers like LoJack, etc...

None of those come from Chevy. All of them come from the dealership.

Stuff that comes from Chevy appears on the build sheet, and yes, a dealer can load it up - vinyl stripes, battery charging kits, black/locking lug nuts....but the dealer gets FAR less money from those, percentage wise, compared to the addons above...

I’ve been kind of searching for cars in transit since I’m pretty confident my order won’t get picked up and what I’m seeing through about 3-4 dealers contacted was all wanted $5k markup and a couple of them wanted the purchase completed right away despite having no eta on the cars arrival at all. They’re calling it “signing up”. If 2023 has a MSRP increase more than normal it won’t stop anyone from buying, there’s still a lot of impulse buying I’m sure, and a lot of people who don’t care that they’re wasting $5k on a markup either because they want the car so bad.

Now fast forward to a few months when GM announces the end/change to the Camaro. How much more do you think vehicles will be marked up then? Should GM/dealers allow markups then? I still can't understand why people are against the basic law of supply and demand. Maybe the government should take over the means of production and put a Camaro in everyone's driveway? Would we then have to change the name to the Comradro?

In a way, they already have. GMs entire product portfolio is in the process of being completely upended as a result of intense government pressure and mandates, with decisions being made in part by holdovers installed during the bailout/government ownership era.

In all seriousness, though, I support free markets, where price is set by supply and demand. Problem is, the new car market is the opposite of a free market. The dealership model is a government protected monopoly. If you want a free market, eliminate franchise laws.

The owner of a NASCAR team gets to markup things more than others do.

These guys are asking for 10K over MSRP. If they find someone willing to pay over $10K, I'm perfectly ok with that, especially given that it's almost exactly built like mine.

Reading this makes me feel very fortunate that I not only found my car in the showroom and didn’t have to wait, but also paid MSRP minus a $750 rebate and an additional $200 off because I didn’t want the factory car cover that it came with but made me take it anyway. 2022 1SS 1LE Wild Cherry M6.

I was just reading a WSJ article that says 82% of recent car buyers are paying some sort of markup lately. Pretty sad statistic. I hope this trend dies in 2022.

I remember seeing an Autoline Daily video back in February that said the same thing - 82% of car buyers in January paid over MSRP according to Edmunds.

Here's a link to the transcript and YouTube video:

As much as some people scream about regulations (it doesn't help that some lawmakers are ok with introducing a poison pill in the works to make regulations look bad), this is what they're for. I hope this is a sign of things to come. Two Arizona Nissan Dealers Fined $500,000 For False Advertising And Forcing Customers To Pay For “Add-ons”

It looks like a SS 1LE in Rapid Blue is available in Lousiana with 1500 miles. It looks like the person didn't like what they bought and got a dodge.
