Fess Up?

Do you guys report performance mods to your car to your insurance company? If you don’t, can they refuse a claim for a incident that is your fault? Just wondering.

I have USAA and I don't have to report parts, if I ever had to file a claim that included those parts there is a separate amount that those are included in and I have the receipts for everything(when my wheels were stolen I believe this is what covered them vs them just paying for the oem equivalent).

I was under the impression that letting my insurance company know about my mods would make my premium skyrocket. In the past I never mentioned the mods to my other cars to the insurance company.

I just called my insurance company last week because I wanted to get a quote to insure my Camaro for a higher value. With all the mods I've done I figured I had no choice with the crap that happened to me in the past(read below). God forbid it ever got stolen or I had a major accident, etc. I was paying $518.04 a year fully insured with the limits that my wife and I have on our leases which is 100/300/100.

The Camaro is now insured for 45K, the insurance company knows about the mods and my new yearly premium is $620.52 Worth the extra 100 bucks a year in my opinion. There is restrictions to the new premium though. I'm only allowed 7500 miles a year on the Camaro which is fine because I only put on 2000 or 3000 on it a year.

The reason I did this is because 2 years ago I bought a 2018 Mustang GT Pemium, it had the Recaro seats, etc. Put a Roush blower on it, full bolt-ons and a shit ton of suspension/drivetrain upgrades. The car had 680 miles on it and some asshole blew a light and took the whole front end off the car. Her insurance company tried to give me a check for 35K. I laughed as the Mustang itself was more than 44k. Even though the car only had 680 miles on it her insurance company said that's retail for a used Mustang. I got a lawyer, sued and got 50K for a car I drove 680 miles and had well over 60K invested in it.

I consider my insurance pretty cheap seeing I live CT. where insurance and everything else are expensive as Hell. I was told by the insurance company I got a really good price because of my clean driving record, my age(50), I'm a Veteran and was in LE at one time.

Allstate would cover a part that was bolted to the car as long as i had receipts. Not with them anymore, but years ago i had a blown camaro that caught fire. They paid me for most of the mods. Was a good bit extra when the car was totaled

Kind of a loaded question. Though NOTHING shocks me anymore, I’d expect that as long as your car fit the legal description of ‘street legal’, you’re still insured. I mean, back when I put cow magnets on my fuel line inlet to the carburetor, did I tell my insurance company? No.

Bonus points for who knows about cow magnets!

I have Grundy insurance for my '79 Vette.....I originally had it insured for $15k.....THEN I put a 383 with a lotta new parts, totally rebuilt the entire suspension, and other stuff.....so I then asked for coverage of $23k.....not only did they oblige, without asking any questions, but the rate actually LOWERED, and they sent me a rebate check toward what I'd already paid....I was totally caught off guard!!
