Range device users

I am wondering if this will keep the forward AFM valves open 100% of the time. The car sounds so much better at an idle when those valves are open the first 30 seconds after a cold start. Then they close and dampen the exhuast note even if the fuse is pulled on the rear NPP valves.

Yes, it will kill AFM but I'm pretty sure the AFM valves aren't closing after the motor starts up. It gets quieter because it comes off high idle. If it is the AFM valves closing its not in response to AFM because the car never goes into V4 mode at idle. I can confirm the car is no louder with the range device installed, I have one that we don't use because AFM in the LT1 works light years better than it did on the Gen 5 but when it was installed the car still quieted down as it came of high idle.

Yep. I think the OP is just referring the volume of the exhaust on a cold start. I can't even tell when the LT1 switches modes. I watch it on the dash switch from v4 to v8 but I can't feel it.

I have had the same experience.

Don't bother with a Range device on the LT1, I have one with the latest FW version, even verified it with the company, keeps throwing CELs, not worth the hassle.

Agree with everyone else...AFM valves only close in V4 mode when crusing. NPP will go fully open on cold start then close up which is what you hear. Also not sure if everyone knows this but if I'm driving in Manual shift mode AFM will not engage regardless of drive mode or speed.

NPP fuse is pulled and on a cold start after about 30 seconds the volume of the exhaust note changes VERY noticeably. Id have a hard time believing its simply coming off high idle. It sure sounds like something mechanical happens to me.

Guessing you mean the performance exhaust which is from my experience open on start up. The exhaust valves close quickly quieting the exhaust.

This has nothing to do with exhaust valves, which by the way should NEVER stay open 100% of the time unless you want a massive destructive collision with a piston..........which is bad.

To add, all cars get quieter after initial startup. Most of the time it's the CATS warming up, but also just in general the exhaust warming up too. My '69 Mustang is much louder on start up.

There is more to it during cold start. One of the reasons the exhaust is louder is that during a cold start the timing is retarded to meet emissions standards, etc.

When it is colder out you may notice it to be even louder as more timing is pulled during a cold start. Once the engine temp starts to rise you notice it start to come off high idle and the ECU adds more timing, which affects the exhaust note.

Have you logged timing to verify this?

Engines are more efficient with more timing advance, to a degree...(no pun intended)

Exactly. My '69 runs louder and better mpg with more timing.
