When someone says they got invoice pricing, that means?

I see some people mentioning they got invoice pricing.

Does that mean they got "sticker price"? or they got what the car cost the dealer?

Dealer Cost, rather what should be dealer cost. So many factors on how a dealership makes money off you, it's nuts.

Yup. To me, it's just a made up number below MSRP, still well above what the dealer actually paid, or they wouldn't be making any profit on half their sales. ...and yes, dealers also make money on options, accessories, finanicing, fees, rustproofing, simonize, tinting, etc.

It's technically what the dealer pays, yes. But due to dealer holdback, they get back some cash (typically 2–3% of MSRP) from the manufacturer. Some people try to use that knowledge to their advantage and try negotiating below invoice.

In my opinion, if they're willing to do invoice pricing (and don't try screwing me over with add-ons), they can keep it. Dealerships gotta make money, it is a business (though I definitely can't wait for Tesla's model to take over).

Invoice pricing is just above what the dealer pays for the vehicle (dealer cost), but significantly lower than MSRP.

Some people are repeat customers that dealers want to keep happy. Sometimes cars have been sitting on the lot too long. The model year is ending, etc. In general, it's hard to find invoice pricing on a new model/revision or anything considered limited production. Everyone knows the very first cars will sell quickly. I'm surprised to hear about people custom ordering cars for invoice price, I thought it was mostly reserved for inventory on the lots, but then again, the dealer knows that car likely won't spend more than a day taking up space or holding up capital on the lot, so its an easy, liquid transaction.

I hope to get an early 1LE later on, if they actually make one, but if the premium to order a limited production model is too high, I'll probably just find a nice 2SS on a lot somewhere. Some of the deals you hear about on the internet are almost unbelievable, or if true, probably unrepeatable. ...and consider the region you live in, market conditions make a big difference, too. If you're shopping purely on price, I'd do what other have suggested, find the volume leader in your area. More volume means they can live on less margin, and probably are more willing to deal.

I agreed to invoice + $500. I was told that I paid too much but I'm fine with the deal.

A dealer makes money from financing as well. Kickback from the banks or a percentage of the loan amount. Seems unethical and shady in a way. I don't trust banks much and I don't trust car dealers.

I plan to have pre-approval for an auto loan from my credit union before I go in to buy just in case I don't like the deals presented.

Invoice is what the dealer is billed, but the manufacturer gives incentives for the dealer to sell vehicles, making the actual dealer cost of the vehicle less than invoice. Sometimes it's a significant difference and they pass part of savings on to the customer (cash allowances, etc).

The dealer told me that invoice is generally priced 2-2.5k less than MSRP, but has told me that recently invoice and msrp pricing is getting closer.

Whoever told you that is dumb. Gen 5 cars were selling for $5k+ over MSRP. getting a new 2016 under MSRP is a great deal.

In addition to profits mentioned above, when you order and complete the sale the dealer has the advantage of making the sale without having to pay any interest on loans they would have made to place a car on the lot for perhaps an extended time. A sale at invoice can still make them a nice profit.

Agreed.

Anyways, I'm one of the members here that is getting invoice. Its not a HUGE number....its 4% off of MSRP. Its also not "dealer cost".
