ZL1 at Buttonwillow CW #13

The sickness continues. Just hitting up every track I can find in California to run the new ZL1. This was a point by session on Sunday. Not the fastest of my day but the traffic was flowing enough to give you an idea of the course if you've not been. I was running consistent 2:01-2:02's throughout the day which was good enough to beat every other brand out there in OEM stock configuration. I'm not a huge fan of the OEM Goodyear F3's but I used them in my last session when my MPSS's went completely away the session prior. My best on the day was a 2:01:365 on the Michelins and the Goodyears got progressively better by laps 4-8, with a 2:04.059, 2:03.074, 2:02.576 and 2:01.427 on OEM. I'll put that session up on youtube later if you're interested in viewing the tire difference on turn in.

Feel free to subscribe if you want. I'm told there are benefits to having over 20 subscribers but don't know what they are yet.

Nope. Not yet. Waited weeks for customer care to get involved and now I'm waiting on the local service department to followup with me. I was told to wait on them, so I'm waiting. The steering has not acted up since.

So you're saying that the stock tires aren't as good as mpss on the track ? That's a huge surprise and a disappointment. I was going to switch from mpss to the Goodyear's when it's tire time for the added grip.

I would not go so far as to suggest that. In most situations I prefer the MPSS over the F3's. However, as you can see from my lap times, I was adjusting to the change well and who knows if that trend would have continued and eventually beat the Michelin times. I think these tires are apples to apples having the MPSS OEM on CTS-V's and the Goodyears developed for the ZL1. Cup2's are where you'll find the difference. If I were to switch it would be to an orange, not another apple. All depends on what you can run.

Don't even get me going on air-pressure...

Nice work, OminouSS, I like the Goodyears and figured they were close to the MPSS's.

I'll run up a video of my last session since i ran the F3's in that session. You guys will get a front row seat to how they compare to the MPSS. Each tire also responds to air pressure a little differently and I have not gotten that figured out yet so take it with a grain of salt. I do run a pyrometer over the tires after every session and I can say that even in the later afternoon temps, the GY F3's ran a little cooler (1.5 degress). Stand by for that vid...

And here is the comparison of the MPSS and GY F3's. Extremely UN-scientific.

Since the Michelins had cycled out the session before, I put the OEM F3's on for the final run of the day. The F3's have between 400-500 miles and no track duty prior to this session. The brakes were also fading a bit. However, I noticed an obvious difference with the initial turn-in traction (or lack there-of) with the G3's. You will see it on the video. It pushed a lot more than the MPSS once warm. It required that I change up my entrance speed by about 5-7 mph to hold the line. At times I failed to do so.

So I am not going to draw a conclusion here because even though it was the same track on the same day, the air pressures were not dialed in on the F3's and the vehicle was not stopping as capably as in prior sessions. In the end, my lap times were only impacted by about a second anyway. That said, I would choose the MPSS over the Goodyears primarily because of my history with the tire. Or I would ditch both to run my Cup2's and call it a day.

Enjoy:

Nicely done. Would love to run with you next time you're at Buttonwillow. I have a personal 13CW best of 2:01.886 in the Camaro. I have a few videos on my Youtube if interested.

That would be extremely fun. You're turning great laps. I have not run with any other Camaros since the beginning of the year. I have chewed up several 350Rs though, lol. I'll reach out next time I'm down that way. I have Thunderhill Friday as they are combining both tracks for a 5 mile !!!! I can't wait! Then it's off to Sonoma/infineon/searspoint/whatevertheycallitnow.

You definitely know your lines and the bumps at that course. Great driving. The bumps there look a touch scary.

The old car in that video.

Just drove home in the new 2017 Today. Looking to get out the Buttonwillow soon with it to see how it compares. Should be fun!!
