I agree, raven87 steve said it well.
What makes cars increase in value? I speculate that its
rarity
popularity at the time, e.g. people wished they could own it 69 camaros, chevelles, hemi's, boss mustangs, hi perf corvettes
star status, was featured in a movie, bandit trans am, hatchback mustangs
represents luxury or performance or rugged utilitarian
similar new models cost more
demographics and trends, enough people now have the money to buy one they wanted back in the day
collectors and investors, often wrong but if it's going up expect them overpay for it too
Baby boomer and previous generations saw cars as a goal to own, and performance and luxury were status symbols. Later generations saw WRX's as a performance car and an Escalade or BMW as a status symbol. Old used examples have little value as they no longer create envy.
When you were 18 how many friends knew the words small block or big block? I would bet you a cup of coffee 1 in 100 couldn't say what that means now.
They might think the slant 6 hatchback duster is more cool than a LS6 Chevelle. Heresy!
I'm sure the manufacturers will continue to make some pace car editions to boost profit and make performance cars as long as they sell. Being faster than the last generation boosts sales, and hurts the resale value of the older cars. So many fast cars out there, ZR1, Z06, ZL1, SS 1LE...GT500 GT350 Hellcat Scat pack
The Z28 is an amazing car in style and performance at the time of manufacture. I don't expect it or other mass produced cars to go up in value.

What in the world is the use of buying those old cars from auctions for those prices and not driving it? The scare factor of wrecking a 1 of xx car doesn't bother me and never has. If I pay those kinds of numbers for a vehicle, bet your ass I am going to drive the wheels off of it. Same goes for my Z. I bought it to drive and track and occasionally show it off at a local show..etc.
I see your point, but if you knew that wrecking your car would cost you $1M, it may factor into your decision to drive it. Yes, you can get insurance, but if you want it to cover the cost of wrecking a classic car then you are limited on miles you can drive. I wouldn't pay those exorbitant prices regardless. That's what old rich guys do and then they just send it over to their garage and wait until increases in value by 15% and then off to the auction it goes. It's just an investment. Nothing more, nothing less. We LOVE cars. They don't necessarily share that passion.... more about the benjis for most of them.

That's the auction list of sold cars at auction, not cars for sale. You have the date of sale, price, mileage and then condition report. The 952 mile Z that sold for $36k has a condition report of 2.7, that's not very good. 1 is best and 5 is worst. Average rating for a car with 952 means it has some issues. Type column is lease, which is lease return or regular, which means someone brought the car to auction to sell (manufacturer or dealer). Last column lists which Manheim Auction sold the car.

The fender and flare areas appear to have dozens of small chips.

On a Z28 they are not "chips". It is called "Patina".
